All performances on this album were recorded on May 22, 1988. At the time, Tete Montoliu, Reggie Johnson and Alvin Queen were the dependable rhythm section behind saxophonist Jerome Richardson while he was booked at the old Cova del Drac in Barcelona. The three were in such top form and had such energy and good rapport, that they agreed to do a trio album. With musicians of this caliber, it simply could not go wrong. They were confident, but more so, they were sympathetic to each other’s ideas.
Tete played in a straight-ahead vein. He was rhythmically solid and never overeager, but still managed to get all he had bubbling inside him out there, on the piano, and put it together beautifully without ever foregoing his swinging melodic presence. Alvin generated considerable excitement with his distinctive, powerful driving force, while Reggie provided just the precise pulse to best serve the twists and turns of Tete’s playing. All the music they recorded that day has remained in the Fresh Sound Records archives for over 30 years, and this is the first time that the complete trio session has come to light. Listening to these performances we can easily agree that in addition to his talent, what comes across when Tete plays the piano more than anything else is his genuineness.

Todas las actuaciones de este álbum se grabaron el 22 de mayo de 1988. En aquel momento, Tete Montoliu, Reggie Johnson y Alvin Queen eran la sección rítmica de confianza del saxofonista Jerome Richardson mientras éste estaba contratado en la antigua Cova del Drac de Barcelona. Los tres estaban en tan buena forma y tenían tanta energía y buena compenetración, que acordaron hacer un álbum en trío. Con músicos de este calibre, simplemente no podía salir mal. Tenían confianza en sí mismos, pero sobre todo simpatizaban con las ideas de los demás.
Tete tocaba en una línea directa. Era rítmicamente sólido y nunca exagerado, pero aún así se las arregló para sacar todo lo que tenía dentro de él, en el piano, y lo puso juntos maravillosamente sin renunciar nunca a su presencia melódica oscilante. Alvin generó una considerable emoción con su distintiva y poderosa fuerza motriz, mientras que Reggie aportó el pulso preciso para servir mejor a los giros y vueltas de la forma de tocar de Tete. Toda la música que grabaron aquel día ha permanecido en los archivos de Fresh Sound Records durante más de 30 años, y ésta es la primera vez que sale a la luz la sesión completa del trío. Al escuchar estas interpretaciones, podemos estar de acuerdo en que, además de su talento, lo que más se percibe cuando Tete toca el piano es su autenticidad.
