Polar AC is a rather unusual CTI release, a collection of leftover tracks from different sessions put out by Creed Taylor after Freddie Hubbard had departed for Columbia. Despite its compilation nature, the results are quite enjoyable. Hubbard is in fine form throughout, and the supporting cast -- including George Benson, Hubert Laws, Ron Carter and Jack DeJohnette -- is top-notch. The arrangements by Don Sebesky and Bob James are typically lush, though the briefer, sparser "Son of Sky Dive" stands apart as the highlight, offering a more direct jazz setting without the orchestral overlay. An uneven but worthwhile set for CTI and Hubbard fans.
