Automatic Translation:
The eponymous album by 31-year-old vibraphonist Warren Wolf, released by Mack Avenue Records and distributed by Distrijazz, marks his debut in the Western market, as he has already released two self-produced works in the Japanese market.
This Baltimore native joins a long list headed by Lionel Hampton and Red Novo and which includes names as important as Milt Jackson, Carl Tjeder, Gary Burton, Bobby Hutcherson, Mike Manieri, Dave Samuels and Stefon Harris, among many others. Since its beginnings, the vibraphone has been an instrument closely linked to jazz and, as can be seen from the names mentioned above, has produced some of its most outstanding players.
Warren Wolf is an album that oozes be bop and hard bop. The vibraphonist and the co-producer of the album and a very important part of his group, the double bass player Christian McBride, have opted for very clear and direct jazz, without going into great melodic or harmonic adventures. At first they played what they know how to do best. And the decision couldn't have worked out better.
The ten songs that make up the album, where a strong autobiographical character can be appreciated, are all creations by Wolf, who shows a great knowledge of all the resources of jazz. It starts with the smooth groove of 427 Mass Ave. and ends with the introspective and delicate Intimate dance, and in the middle there is space for personal showcasing, such as Señor Mouse, where only the vibraphone sounds; a memory for Hurricane Katrina, with a very quiet beginning but which ends with a powerful groove and for the delicacy of Natural beauties.
Another of Warren Wolf's successes is that, without losing the individuality of each member of the band, as is evident in the excellent solos they play, he has given priority to the sound of the group in his compositions and in the way they are carried out.
We will have to keep an eye on the career of this vibraphonist called Warren Wolf in the future.
