Dave Brubeck Trio • Live From Vienna 1967

This disc collects a recently discovered recording of a performance by the Dave Brubek Trio at the Vienna Konzerthaus, which is the silk of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, one of the temples of classical music in Europe, on November 12, 1967.

This recording has a very jazz musicians' history.
The Dave Brubeck Quartet, consisting of saxophonist Paul Desmond, drummer Joe Morello and double bassist Eugene Wrigh, was coming to the end of its last European tour in 1967.

Before Vienna they played in Hamburg (Germany) on November 10th and when they had to leave for the Austrian capital the saxophonist did not show up to take the plane. It was all right, he would leave on another flight and arrive the next day. But he didn't show up either.

So on the day of the performance in Vienna the Dave Brubeck Quartet became the Dave Brubeck Trio. And practically everything had to be improvised. And the result, splendid, is this one you can hear.

The reason why Paul Desmond disappeared has its explanation: the saxophonist met an old friend and they went out to celebrate in the bars of Hamburg. And, well, these things happen when you party and drink too much alcohol.
