Un disco muy bueno, que por momentos roza la excelencia. Así es el último disco de Esbjörn Svensson Trio. Después de este “Leucocyte” ya no habrá, por desgracia, más trabajos originales de este E.S.T.. Tal vez se recuperen viejas grabaciones para satisfacer a los aficionados que se han quedado huérfanos de esta banda, pero este es el último álbum del trío sueco, acaso el mejor trío de jazz europeo que ha habido en los últimos años. La razón es sabida: el fallecimiento a los 44 años, mientras practicaba submarinismo, del pianista Esbjörn Svensson.
Resulta increíble que este disco sea producto de una jam sesión realizada por el grupo durante dos días en Sydney, mientras realizaban su gira australiana. Es cierto que la banda funcionaba mucho de esta manera para, posteriormente, dar forma a los temas de sus discos, pero lo que aquí sucede no es normal, pues si desconoce este dato parece que todo está compuesto y escrito. Es decir, el grado de complicidad y conocimiento mutuo al que habían llegado los tres integrantes de la banda era tal que rozaba lo telepático. La música fluye. Así sin más. El añadido de efectos y paisajes sonoros electrónicos en el proceso de post-producción, sirve para dar unidad y continuidad a lo que se escucha.
El décimo segundo disco del trío -que se ha convertido a su pesar en su legado póstumo- muestra a la banda en la plenitud de sus facultades, abierta a nuevas perspectivas, capaz de explorar nuevos caminos y de no dormirse en los laureles. Hay momentos apoteósicos; como la primera parte de “Premonition” que lleva por título “Earth”, donde muestran uno de los caminos del jazz del futuro. No menos excelente es “Jazz”, el cuarto tema del disco y que puede entenderse como una declaración de cómo entienden ellos que debe ser el jazz un lugar donde el jazz y el pop-rock se unen no para hacer una fusión sino para crear un nuevo concepto sonoro; y con “Ab initio”, la primera de las cuatro partes en las que se divide la composición que da título al álbum, es que se sobran.

A very good album, bordering on excellence at times. Such is the latest album by Esbjörn Svensson Trio. After this ‘Leucocyte’ there will, unfortunately, be no more original works by this E.S.T.. Perhaps old recordings will be revived to satisfy the fans who have been orphaned by this band, but this is the last album by the Swedish trio, perhaps the best European jazz trio in recent years. The reason is well known: the death of pianist Esbjörn Svensson at the age of 44 while scuba diving.
Incredibly, this album is the product of a jam session held by the band over two days in Sydney, while they were on their Australian tour. It is true that the band used to work in this way a lot in order to subsequently shape the themes of their albums, but what happens here is not normal, because if you don't know this fact, it seems that everything is composed and written. That is to say, the degree of complicity and mutual knowledge that the three members of the band had reached was such that it bordered on the telepathic. The music flows. Just like that. The addition of electronic effects and soundscapes in the post-production process serves to give unity and continuity to what is heard.
The trio's twelfth album - which has become, to their regret, their posthumous legacy - shows the band at the peak of their powers, open to new perspectives, able to explore new paths and not rest on their laurels. There are moments of apotheosis, such as the first part of ‘Premonition’ entitled ‘Earth’, where they show one of the paths of the jazz of the future. No less excellent is ‘Jazz’, the fourth track on the album, which can be understood as a declaration of how they understand jazz to be a place where jazz and pop-rock come together not to make a fusion but to create a new sonic concept; and with ‘Ab initio’, the first of the four parts into which the composition that gives the album its title is divided, they are left over.
