Lou Donaldson • The Midnight Creeper

Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine
As he delved deeper into commercial soul-jazz and jazz-funk, Lou Donaldson became better at it. While lacking the bite of his hard bop improvisations or the hard-swinging funk of Alligator Bogaloo, Midnight Creeper succeeds where its predecessor, Mr. Shing-A-Ling failed: it offers a thoroughly enjoyable set of grooving, funky soul-jazz. The five songs -- including two originals by Donaldson and one each by Lonnie Smith (who also plays organ on the record), Teddy Vann, and Harold Ousley -- aren't particularly distinguished, but the vibe is important, not the material. And the band -- Donaldson, Smith, trumpeter Blue Mitchell, guitarist George Benson, and drummer Leo Morris -- strikes the right note, turning in a fluid, friendly collection of bluesy funk vamps. Donaldson could frequently sound stilted on his commercial soul-jazz dates, but that's not the case with Midnight Creeper. He rarely was quite as loose on his late-'60s/early-'70s records as he is here, and that's what makes Midnight Creeper a keeper.

Babik Reinhardt • Baccara

Biography
"If there is an argument for the theory that talent is purely inherited, then Babik Reinhardt should be the greatest living Gypsy jazz player." -- Andy Mackenzie
While many jazz artists have followed in the footsteps of Gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt, one inherited his legacy naturally: Babik Reinhardt was Django Reinhardt's second son. "Despite being the second son of Django," noted Mackenzie, "Babik has demonstrated little interest in recreating his father." Born on June 8, 1944, in Paris, the younger Reinhardt learned the basics of guitar from his mother, Naguine Reinhardt, and learned more from uncles and cousins. His father, meanwhile, taught him piano (believing there would be more work for a pianist), though the young musician eventually chose the guitar. Babik Reinhardt was nine when his father died.
Coming of age in a different era than his father, his influences branched beyond acoustic jazz guitar and included electric guitarists like Wes Montgomery and Jimmy Raney. "...Babik prudently developed an electric guitar style that was sufficiently personal and far-removed from that of his father to allow him his own identity and to avoid unwanted comparisons," wrote Mackenzie. He recorded his first album, Swing 67, in the 1960s with the Arvanitis Trio, though writer Fred Sharp expressed the opinion that Reinhardt's skill had not fully developed at this point. Reinhardt would eventual embrace jazz fusion, sometimes relying on no more than his Gibson ES-175 and a backing bass player. He also recorded with other fusion players, including Larry Coryell and Didier Lockwood.
Like his father, Reinhardt was also a composer. "He composed many pieces and his ballads have all the warmth and expression of his father's compositions," wrote Sharp. Babik Reinhardt died of a heart attack on November 13, 2001, in Cannes on the French Riviera. He was 57. "The music and legend of Django Reinhardt has lived on for over 65 years," wrote Sharp. "Babik has surely inherited all the musicality of his father, while not trying to copy him...."

Dizzy Reece • Soundin' Off

Review by Rick Anderson
Originally issued in 1960 and subsequently reissued multiple times in a variety of formats, the trumpeter Dizzy Reece's fourth Blue Note outing as a leader is here presented in Super Audio CD format by the APO label. While it would have been nice to see a bit more material on a reissue like this (with at least a couple of alternate takes), the original program is densely packed with high-quality music and makes for a solidly satisfying listening experience on its own. The opening track, interestingly enough, is both a ballad and a standard: on "Ghost of a Chance" Reece plays with a buttery, burnished tone that coats the familiar melody in a golden haze like the quality of light at dusk. The sun rises again on the next track, a midtempo number titled "Once in a While," and the tempo ratchets up another notch on "Eb Pob," a rather undistinguished composition on the "I Got Rhythm" changes that is completely redeemed by the quality of the solos. "Yesterday" finds pianist Walter Bishop delivering a curiously lackadaisical solo, but he gets back in the groove on a wonderful version of "Our Love Is Here to Stay." The program ends with a nice, bouncy blues original titled "Blue Streak." Throughout the album, Reece digs into his bag of sonic tricks without ever doing anything that detracts from the music itself. Soundin' Off is a little bit uneven, but is never less than a solid pleasure to listen to.
