Michael Naura Quartet • Call

Perhaps Naura's finest album, with all the compositions his, Call was the German pianist's first recording in eight years, following a lengthy period of recovery from polyserositis. The session is splendid testament to an era when classically tinged European reflection and American heat could meld as fruitfully as the long-classic triplet feel of jazz and recent rock accents ("Soledad"), and spontaneous improvisatory verve (parts of "Mary" and "Miriam") inflect what at times is a near-pop sensitivity to matters of narrative bite and dynamics. As Ed Motta points out in a short but useful addition to the original sleevenote by Siegfried Schmidt-Joos (both printed in German and English) while one might think that the Fender Rhodes and the vibraphone are too close to each other sonically to make effective partners, Naura and Schlüter interact to telling and uncrowded effect. Their sensitive use of electronically enhanced sound conjures a rhythmically captivating series of dream-like textures and mood: relish the mix of rubato reverie and freshly conceived propulsion in "Soledad" and "Don't Stop" or the kicking swing of "M.O.C."; the spaciously cast lyricism of the arco-underpinned "Garden" or the 6/8 groove of the Latinate "Mary". Throughout, Weber and the excellent Nay — who didn't play together regularly with Naura — are deep in the pocket, now driving, now caressing music which is very much of its time and yet, in good part, archetypal, timeless. Ars longa, vita brevis, indeed.

Quizas el mejor album de Naura, con todas las composiciones de su autoria, Call fue la primera grabacion del pianista aleman en ocho años, tras un largo periodo de recuperacion de una poliserositis. La sesion es un esplendido testimonio de una era en la que la reflexion europea de tinte clasico y el calor americano podian fusionarse tan fructiferamente como el clasico compas triple del jazz y los acentos del rock mas reciente ("Soledad"), y la verve improvisatoria espontanea (partes de "Mary" y "Miriam") impregna lo que en ocasiones es una sensibilidad casi pop hacia cuestiones de mordiente narrativo y dinamica. Como señala Ed Motta en una breve pero util adicion a las notas originales de Siegfried Schmidt-Joos (ambas impresas en aleman e ingles), aunque podria pensarse que el Fender Rhodes y el vibrafono son demasiado cercanos sonicamente para ser socios efectivos, Naura y Schlüter interactuan con un efecto revelador y sin aglomeraciones. Su uso sensible del sonido electronicamente mejorado conjura una serie ritmicamente cautivadora de texturas y atmosferas oniciras: disfrutad de la mezcla de ensoñacion rubato y propulsion recien concebida en "Soledad" y "Don't Stop" o el swing enardecedor de "M.O.C."; el lirismo de amplio espacio sustentado por el arco en "Garden" o el groove en 6/8 del latinizante "Mary". A lo largo del disco, Weber y el excelente Nay — que no tocaban regularmente juntos con Naura — estan profundamente en el bolsillo, ahora impulsando, ahora acariciando una musica que es muy de su tiempo y sin embargo, en buena parte, arquetipica, atemporal. Ars longa, vita brevis, en efecto.
