Notes: This compilation draws from Thelonious Monk's pioneering Blue Note sessions recorded between 1947 and 1952, presenting some of the earliest recorded versions of several Monk compositions that would become jazz standards. The album includes the original Blue Note recording of "'Round Midnight," one of the most recorded jazz standards of all time, which Monk first recorded on November 21, 1947. Other classics featured include early versions of "Ruby, My Dear" (named after Rubie Richardson, Monk's first love), "Evidence," "Epistrophy," "Straight, No Chaser," and "Well You Needn't." These sessions, produced by Blue Note founder Alfred Lion and recorded at WOR Studios, captured Monk's fully formed compositional and playing style that remained remarkably consistent throughout his career. The album was later reissued in 1996 by CEMA and in 2006 by Collectables. All of this material is readily available in more comprehensive form in Mosaic's "The Complete Blue Note Recordings of Thelonious Monk" box set (1983/1994).
