Ben Webster & Joe Zawinul • Soulmates

Review from AllMusic (by Jim Todd) - 4 Stars:
What initially seems like an unlikely pairing for this session delivers on its unique pedigree with performances that do full justice to tenor legend Ben Webster and to the then up and coming pianist Joe Zawinul. Recorded in 1963 while the pianist was a member of the Cannonball Adderley Sextet, the session came about as a result of Webster's and Zawinul's sharing a New York apartment for several months. It's actually billed as Zawinul's first session as leader and Webster's last in the U.S. before his move to Europe. The tunes generally keep to mid-tempos, a pace that affords Webster the opportunity to wield the gentler side of his legendary sound. It may tend to the mellower side of things, but that simply means there's more opportunity to luxuriate in Webster's peerless sound.

Notes: This historic collaboration brought together tenor saxophone legend Ben Webster with young Austrian pianist Joe Zawinul, who at the time was a member of Cannonball Adderley's sextet (and would later co-found Weather Report with Wayne Shorter in 1970). The album came about after Webster and Zawinul shared a New York apartment for several months. This was Zawinul's first recording as a leader and Webster's final U.S. recording before permanently relocating to Europe later that year. The album features famous liner notes written by pianist Bill Evans at the request of producer Orrin Keepnews. Evans' notes are considered among his finest writing about jazz, exploring themes of group improvisation and the relationship between composition and spontaneity. The title track "Soulmates" was composed by Webster, while "Frog Legs" was written by Zawinul. "Evol Deklaw Ni" (read backwards: "In Walked Love") was composed by cornetist Thad Jones. The album showcases Webster's mature, mellower sound with mid-tempo ballads and features two different rhythm sections: Richard Davis on bass for four tracks and Sam Jones on bass for the four tracks featuring Thad Jones on cornet. Despite the stylistic differences between the old-school swing master Webster and the modern, forward-thinking Zawinul, the collaboration works remarkably well. The album has remained in print through Fantasy's Original Jazz Classics (OJC) reissue series.
