Jimmy McGriff continued on a high roll on his second tour with Milestone, taping another dual-billed soul-jazz album with the redoubtable Hank Crawford. You know what to expect by now -- hardass, down-home, blues-drenched organ trio-plus-sax grooving -- but this is a really potent gusher of that genre, rising to the level of McGriff's idiom-defining The Dream Team from 1996. Throughout, Crawford produces some sterling roadhouse tenor work and guitarist Wayne Boyd stays resolutely in the pocket. Drummer Bernard Purdie stokes the engines from the opening crack of the funky "Peanuts," and contributes to a refreshingly kicking transformation of "I Only Have Eyes for You," and lays on a devastating backbeat whenever asked. John Coltrane's minor blues "Mr. P.C." also responds well to the soul-jazz treatment. Recorded the old-fashioned Prestige way -- in two sessions, with Bob Porter producing in Rudy Van Gelder's studio -- it's amazing and gratifying that bluesicians are still allowed to make records this way.

Jimmy McGriff continuó con su buena racha en su segunda gira con Milestone, grabando otro álbum de soul-jazz con el temible Hank Crawford. A estas alturas ya sabes lo que te espera: un trío de órgano duro, casero, empapado de blues y con ritmo de saxo, pero éste es un potente borbotón de ese género, a la altura del The Dream Team de McGriff de 1996, que definió el lenguaje. En todo momento, Crawford produce un excelente trabajo de tenor de carretera y el guitarrista Wayne Boyd se mantiene resueltamente en el bolsillo. El batería Bernard Purdie atiza los motores desde el comienzo de la funky «Peanuts», y contribuye a una refrescante transformación de «I Only Have Eyes for You», marcando un ritmo devastador siempre que se le pide. El blues menor de John Coltrane «Mr. P.C.» también responde bien al tratamiento soul-jazz. Grabado a la vieja usanza de Prestige - en dos sesiones, con Bob Porter produciendo en el estudio de Rudy Van Gelder - es sorprendente y gratificante que a los músicos de blues todavía se les permita grabar discos de esta manera.
