Pete Rugolo • Ten Trumpets & Two Guitars

Review by arwulf arwulf
A sequel to his cool, carefully mannered Mercury Perfect Presence Sound album Ten Trombones Like Two Pianos, Pete Rugolo's Ten Trumpets and Two Guitars showcases a skilled team of brass players who juggle trumpets and flugelhorns backed by a solid rhythm section featuring guitarists Howard Roberts and Al Viola. Although some of Rugolo's arrangements contain squirrel-like passages, most of the textures encountered here are characteristically cool and firmly rooted in traditional jazz. Rugolo invokes various trumpeters including Henry Busse ("Hot Lips"); Louis Armstrong ("Struttin' with Some Barbecue"); Clyde McCoy ("Sugar Blues") and Cootie Williams ("Echoes of Harlem"). In a friendly spirit of modernistic playfulness, the old time melody "Whispering" is revealed as the root of Dizzy Gillespie's "Groovin' High." The last two tracks feature only the guitarists accompanied by vibraphone and rhythm. This intriguing music was reissued on compact disc in 2007 by the Fresh Sound label as part of Rugolo's Exploring New Sounds.
