Review from Cashbox (June 25, 1960):
McLean's emergence as a major new alto voice is marked by his driving, energetic playing style. His intense approach shines on tracks including "Bean And The Boys," "I Never Knew," and "Chasin' The Bird," supported excellently by Curtis Fuller, Paul Chambers, Louis Hayes, Webster Young, and Gil Coggins. An important recording session for Jackie McLean's developing career.

Notes: This album was recorded during two separate 1957 sessions but not released until 1960 on New Jazz, a Prestige subsidiary label. The quartet tracks feature McLean with the Mal Waldron trio, while the sextet adds three horns including Washington D.C. trumpeter Webster Young (encouraged by McLean) and trombonist Curtis Fuller (later a member of the Art Farmer-Benny Golson Jazztet). "Bean and the Boys" is a Coleman Hawkins composition based on "Lover Come Back to Me," first recorded by Hawkins in 1946. Down Beat magazine gave the album 3.5 stars, with reviewer Barbara Gardner praising the energetic performances but noting that the all-up-tempo program created some sameness. She singled out "Chasin' the Bird" (a bebop standard) for its exciting interplay between horns and rhythm section, particularly highlighting Paul Chambers' bass work. The album showcases McLean's characteristic urgent, passionate alto style alongside his growing melodic sophistication.
