Ralph Lalama is a highly respected American jazz tenor saxophonist born on January 30, 1951, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (raised in West Aliquippa). He grew up in a musical family—his father was a steelworker, his mother a singer, and his father also played drums. Lalama graduated from The Dana School of Music at Youngstown State University in Ohio, where legendary jazz composer Thad Jones recognized his remarkable talent and encouraged him to move to New York All About Jazz.
Since arriving in New York, Lalama has achieved dignified status as a widely respected master of the tenor saxophone through his work with the big bands of Woody Herman, Buddy Rich, Carla Bley, and the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra All About Jazz—now known as the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. He joined the Mel Lewis Orchestra in 1983 and has been a featured soloist at New York's Village Vanguard virtually every Monday night for the past thirty years NEPM.
Lalama is an excellent tenor saxophonist influenced primarily by Hank Mobley and Sonny Rollins AllMusic, with a playing style that evokes the prime years of Blue Note Records. His performance abilities span from small group settings to large ensembles, and he excels particularly in chordless trio formats.
Lalama is a three-time Grammy winner through his work with the Joe Lovano Nonet and the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra Purchase College. He has recorded extensively, leading nine albums of his own and appearing on more than sixty recordings as a sideman. His notable recordings as a leader include albums for the Dutch label Criss Cross Jazz, such as "Circle Line" (1997), which received 4½ stars from Down Beat Magazine.
