Clifford Jordan • Down Through The Years

Review
by Ken Dryden
This 1991 big-band performance at Condon's in New York City also represents the final recording as a leader by Clifford Jordan, who died in 1993. In addition to Jordan's powerful and soulful tenor sax, trumpeters Dizzy Reece and Don Sickler, alto saxophonist Jerome Richardson, and pianist Ronnie Mathews are among the all-stars present on the date. The set is dominated by Jordan's originals, including his driving chart "Highest Mountain," the loping "Down Through the Years" (with a brilliant arrangement by Sickler that features himself and baritone saxophonist Charles Davis to good effect), and the very tense "Third Avenue," arranged by Reece, who also solos after the leader. The playful, upbeat arrangement of Duke Ellington's "Don't Get Around Much Anymore" is credited to the band as a whole, playing off the soloists against the brass and reed sections. Although liner note writer Stanley Crouch hints that additional music from this live date was recorded, sadly, none of it has been released as of yet.
