Beiggja • Morning

Review from UK Jazz News:
Released on Hubro, an Oslo label that concentrates on jazz and improvised music, Morning is the recording of a first meeting between a group of established, curious and creative European musicians. Norwegians Mats Eilertsen on bass, Per Oddvar Johansen on drums and pianist Kjetil Mulelid met Dutch saxophonist Kika Sprangers for a couple of days at the drummer's home, by their account with a few tunes and ideas. The resulting recording has an air of spontaneity and thoughtfulness, and is a compelling document. Sprangers' saxophone is central to the ensemble sound. A warm, breathy tone with just the hint of a long slow vibrato, in many of the pieces there's a sense of her pointing the way, or leading the quartet into an exploration of a melodic idea, even if sometimes textures and colours have been sketched first by piano or the rustling of Johansen at the kit. The title track Morning continues the mood, Mulelid first sketching out a plaintive melody with flavours of a spiritual, before Sprangers picks it up and piano and sax develop it more in dialogue. Other tunes have a more urgent tone. Love Story opens with a melody that has almost boppish turns and an Ornette-ish feel as they scamper through and the bass doubles the sax. Encore leans most heavily on a rhythmic figure as the binding logic, and sax and piano blend attractively to trace out a melody, before Sprangers leads the dance again, the pulse only gradually dissolving as they finish. Beiggja have created a beautiful, absorbing recording.
