La mode actuelle dans le jazz manouche semble être aux albums collectifs. Pourquoi pas... Tant que les artistes réunis pour l’occasion ne cèdent pas à la facilité de la compétition stérile et songent plutôt à jouer ensemble et à faire de la musique, on approuve.
Et force de reconnaitre qu’ici, nos quatre mousquetaires ont fait quelques louables efforts pour ne pas consentir à un penchant (bien naturel au demeurant lorsqu’on possède comme eux une aussi redoutable et efficace technique...) pour la virtuosité gratuite comme unique dessein et fin en soi.
Tout d’abord, le choix du répertoire va s’avérer particulièrement pertinent : quelques saucissons pour appâter le chaland (Sweet Georgia Brown, I’ll see you in my dreams, Topsy) et puis place aux raretés de Django : peu jouées (Nuits de Saint-Germain-des-Prés, Rythme futur), voire quasiment jamais reprises (Symphonie, Pêche à la mouche), c’est toujours un grand plaisir de re-découvrir ces merveilles. Chaque soliste a également apporté au groupe une composition de son cru : Djazz pour Steeve Laffont , balade lente et limpide modulant agréablement mais sans grande originalité. Yorgui Loeffler s’en sort mieux avec For Kyriassa, superbe bossa qui n’est pas sans évoquer les plus belles compositions de Dorado Schmitt. Enfin, le jeune Chriss Campion nous offre un sympathique swing medium, Yentl permettant au contrebassiste Gino Roman de se lancer dans un joli chorus. Les trois guitaristes ont également eu l’occasion de jouer seul sur un titre de leur choix : Chriss à choisi Les Parapluies de Cherbourg, morceau qu’il a du jouer des centaines de fois avec son père Marcel Campion à l’ombre de la Grande Roue des Tuileries. Yorgui se délècte pour sa part sur une superbe valse de Lulu Reinhardt et fort justement intitulée Valse à Lulu... Yorgui aime les valses, et reconnaissons que les valses le lui rendent bien ! Quant à Steeve, il s’exprime magnifiquement sur une jolie composition de Gino Roman, Romano, bossa subtile évoquant autant Rio que l’Andalousie et qui colle parfaitement à la personnalité du guitariste manouche de Perpignan. Et l’album se clôt sur une reprise audacieuse de... Chick Corea (Got a match) dont le thème "casse-gueule" n’effraie personne !
Un effort a été fait sur les arrangements : nos amis ne se contentent pas de jouer la grille, et on sent bien qu’un travail préalable a été réalisé, surtout dans les introductions (SGB, Topsy...) et dans l’exposition des thèmes parfois joués à l’unisson (effet toujours garanti !).
Quant au jeu des musiciens, que dire... C’est du haut de gamme venu du Sud, de l’Est et de la capitale ! Les trois lascars jouent admirablement, se passent et se repassent le médiator avec une jubilation communicative, et sans en faire de trop. Mention tout de même à Yorgui, qui sidère toujours autant par sa précision, son attaque et sa... fulgurance !
Latchès est un donc excellent album, peut-être pas formidablement original mais qui s’écoute et s’écoutera encore avec toujours beaucoup de plaisir. Et bien sûr, un grand bravo à Michel Mercier pour cette production, encore une fois, impeccable !
