Review
The short-lived label Wax was active during 1947. It was run by bassist Al Hall and usually featured pianist Jimmy Jones. Most of its sessions (all but five numbers by Jones) are reissued on this definitive CD. There are eight piano solos or trio numbers showcasing Jimmy Jones, four by the Al Hall Quintet (with trumpeter Dick Vance in top form along with tenor saxophonist Ben Webster), and various selections with solos by trumpeter Bill Coleman, altoist Otto Hardwick, trombonist Lawrence Brown, altoist Johnny Hodges, and baritonist Harry Carney. The music overall is small-group swing without any real hint of bebop. The performances were formerly quite rare and they have dated well. Since there are not that many selections around from this era featuring Coleman, Hardwick, and Vance, this is a particularly valuable historical release.

Revisar
