Fresh from recording the epochal Kind Of Blue, Davis took his quintet on the road to Europe. It's hard to top the group presented here--John Coltrane on tenor, Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums--Miles doesn't disappoint in either his own spectacular playing or in leading his ensemble to new exploratory heights. This date was recorded in Zurich in 1960.

The four tracks range from 10 to 20 minutes in length, giving each musician plenty of room to stretch out. The highlights include version of "So What" at an increased tempo and the gorgeous "All Blues" from the Kind Of Blue sessions. As always, Davis exhibits his impeccably cool, poetic use of phrasing and space. But it is Coltrane who really shines here, unfurling chaotic hails of notes in his burning, intense solos. Live In Zurich is a valuable document of one of the most formidable jazz ensembles ever.
