Review from AllMusic:
Here is an overlooked gem from a most unlikely source, recorded in a most unlikely genre -- commercial 1970s jazz-funk. No one expected the loudly-dressed bandleader of The Tonight Show to put out a fusion album like Brand New Thing in 1977, and as a result it never found the audience it richly deserved. Produced by Tom Scott, who was riding high on his L.A. Express work and the Starsky & Hutch theme, the album features a stellar cast of session players: Richard Tee on keyboards, Eric Gale and Lee Ritenour on guitars, Anthony Jackson on bass, Rick Marotta on drums and Ralph MacDonald on percussion. Severinsen grooves comfortably on the up-tempo pieces without ever dominating them, letting his accompanists provide the variety, while on ballads like "Soft Touch" his focus on melody over technique is exactly what is called for. Brand New Thing is not only a very good fusion album, it is a very good jazz album and certainly one of Doc Severinsen's very best.
