Harold Mabern • Pisces Calling

 

A tremendous little trio date from pianist Harold Mabern -- an obscure set from the late 70s, but a great one too -- and a session that definitely draws on some of the energy he picked up while playing on Strata East sides at the time! Mabern plays both acoustic and electric piano -- the former with a hard-hitting, modally-rhythmic energy that's totally great -- very searing and searching, in ways that drive the trio wonderfully forward. The electric cuts are nice too -- slightly mellower, but still filled with a deep sense of soul -- thanks in part to impeccable rhythm work from Jamil Nasser on bass and Walt Boden on drums. Titles include a great take on "Too Late To Fall Back Baby", with a hint of synth acting almost like horns -- a version of Keno Duke's "Pisces Calling", and the tracks "Edward Lee", "Waltzing Westward", and "The Lyrical Cole-Man"

Un pequeño y tremendo trío del pianista Harold Mabern -- un oscuro set de finales de los 70, pero también genial -- ¡y una sesión que definitivamente se nutre de parte de la energía que adquirió mientras tocaba en Strata East sides en aquella época! Mabern toca tanto el piano acústico como el eléctrico, el primero con una energía contundente y modalmente rítmica que es totalmente genial, muy ardiente y en busca de formas que impulsan al trío maravillosamente hacia adelante. Los cortes eléctricos también son agradables, ligeramente más suaves, pero llenos de un profundo sentido del alma, gracias en parte al impecable trabajo rítmico de Jamil Nasser al bajo y Walt Boden a la batería.
