Duke Pearson • Merry Ole Soul

 

This is one of the better Christmas themed jazz albums and as such deserves wider recognition. Pearson's arrangements are creative and Arto Moreira's percussion work keeps things jingling and jangling for that festive touch. Sleigh Ride, the jaunty opener, has been featured in compilations and is thus the best know track. It's a pretty relaxed piece where Pearson and Moreira trade licks based around the central theme. It's followed by a thorough and at times almost avant-garde deconstruction of The Little Drummer Boy. Other highlights include the seldom covered Wassail Song and a very brief but moving rendition of Little Town of Bethlehem.

Este es uno de los mejores álbumes de jazz con temática navideña y como tal merece un mayor reconocimiento. Los arreglos de Pearson son creativos y el trabajo de percusión de Arto Moreira hace que las cosas tintineen y tintineen para dar ese toque festivo. Sleigh Ride, el alegre tema de apertura, ha sido presentado en compilaciones y por lo tanto es el tema más conocido. Es una pieza bastante relajada en la que Pearson y Moreira intercambian lengüetazos basados en el tema central. Le sigue una deconstrucción completa y a veces casi vanguardista de The Little Drummer Boy. Otros puntos destacados incluyen la raramente cubierta Wassail Song y una muy breve pero conmovedora interpretación de Little Town of Bethlehem.
