VA • Zydeco Champs

Review by Steve Leggett
This generous 22-track sampler of Louisiana zydeco stompers recorded over the years for Chris Strachwitz's Arhoolie Records imprint has more dance energy than a barrel of caffeine-injected monkeys, kicking off with the great Clifton Chenier's "Josephine Par Se Ma Femme" and never really letting up for the duration of the disc. Chenier's bluesy, haunting version of "Black Gal" is a clear highlight.
