AllMusic Review (by Scott Yanow):
Drummer Elvin Jones' 1993 Enja recording is one of the most well-rounded sets he has ever led. His Elvin Jones Jazz Machine of the time included such promising young players as trumpeter Nicholas Payton and trombonist Delfeayo Marsalis, with the veteran Sonny Fortune on saxophone and flute. With pianist Willie Pickens and bassist Cecil McBee completing the group and Kevin Mahogany contributing soulful vocals to several tracks, this is a very impressive lineup. The music includes Ellington and Strayhorn classics like the title track, "Lush Life" and "A Flower Is a Lovesome Thing" plus newer originals. As for the drummer, there is still no one around who has captured the sound and spirit of Elvin Jones better than himself.
