Rodney Jordan • Memphis Blue

 

Bassist Rodney Jordan serves up vintage Blue Note-style jazz on this hip quintet album with a front line of Melvin Jones/tp-fh, Mark Sterbank/ts-ss and  a rhythm team with Louis Heriveaux/p with Quentin E. Baxter/dr. They loyalties are on the collective sleeves as Baxter delivers the shuffling press rolls on the snappy “The Art Of Blakey” and brings muscle underneath for the horns on “Minority”. The horns meld deliciously, with Jones giving a clarion call on h is own “The Storm Will Pass”  and going sweet on the funky tribute “Hargrove” Heriveaux is flowing under a muted Jones on “Autumn Leaves” and bops for the full toned Sterbank on “Small Portion”, with the leader snapping the stallions in line all the way through. Dry rubbed hard bop on a blue plate. No need for extra sauce.

El bajista Rodney Jordan ofrece jazz al estilo vintage de Blue Note en este moderno álbum de quinteto con una primera línea formada por Melvin Jones/tp-fh, Mark Sterbank (ts-ss) y un equipo rítmico formado por Louis Heriveaux (p) y Quentin E. Baxter (dr). Su lealtad queda patente cuando Baxter ofrece unos redobles arrastrados en el ágil «The Art Of Blakey» y aporta fuerza a los metales en «Minority». Los instrumentos de viento se fusionan deliciosamente, con Jones haciendo sonar su trompeta en su propio tema «The Storm Will Pass»  y suavizando el tono en el funky homenaje «Hargrove». Heriveaux fluye bajo un Jones silenciado en «Autumn Leaves» y acompaña al Sterbank, con su tono pleno, en «Small Portion», con el líder manteniendo a los caballos en fila durante todo el tema. Hard bop seco y frotado en un plato azul. No hace falta añadir más salsa.
