Pony Poindexter • Plays The Big Ones

 

An excellent album from the great Pony Poindexter – one of his few dates as a leader, and a real lost killer from early 60s Prestige! Pony's working here on alto and soprano sax – the latter of which sounds especially nice – all sharp-edged and angular, and cast out over some very groovy rhythms from Gildo Mahones on piano, George Tucker on bass, and Jimmie Smith on drums! The "Big Ones" in the title are some of the grooviest pop tunes of the 60s – like "Fly Me To The Moon", "Midnight In Moscow", "Moon River", and "Twistin USA" – and they're given a jaunty soul-jazz approach by Pony, who plays some of the best soprano and alto sax he's ever recorded!

Un excelente álbum del gran Pony Poindexter, una de sus pocas grabaciones como líder y una auténtica joya perdida de Prestige de principios de los 60. Pony toca aquí el saxo alto y el soprano, este último con un sonido especialmente agradable, afilado y angular, sobre unos ritmos muy groovy de Gildo Mahones al piano, George Tucker al bajo y Jimmie Smith a la batería. Las «grandes» del título son algunas de las melodías pop más groovy de los años 60, como «Fly Me To The Moon», «Midnight In Moscow», «Moon River» y «Twistin USA», a las que Pony les da un alegre toque de soul-jazz, tocando algunos de los mejores saxos soprano y alto que ha grabado jamás.
