Brian Bromberg • Full Circle

Brian Bromberg indeed completes a full circle here on his new recording, meaning, he started his musical career on the drums and now returns to sit behind the kit. Guests include Alex Acuna, Charlie Bishirat, Bob Sheppard, Mitch Forman, Arturo Sandoval, Lee Thornburg, Kirk Whalum plus more. This 360 view is most exemplified by the repertoire - Full Circle is pretty much a straight-ahead jazz date unlike anything of Brian's career and yes, he does play a bunch of bass too. There is no guitar on this recording. All guitar-sounding tracks are played on a piccolo bass. Brian's piccolo bass on this recording is an arched top hollow body bass guitar that is tuned to the register of a guitar, one full octave and a fourth above standard bass tuning.

Bromberg and all of the players on this very nice album sound top-notch. Brian is in fine form as a bass player on this album, sounding virtuosic on both upright and piccolo basses. You'd be  hard-pressed to find a bass player with a set of chops like Bromberg, and this album is another shining example of that assertion. Bromberg has a solo on almost every track, but it doesn't get tiring, because he is such an impressive and engaging soloist.

Full Circle, is his first album since 2012. In between these two albums, Bromberg suffered an injury that left him with a back broken in two places and requiring rehabilitation to be able to walk. Full Circle is a testament to his recovery.

The disc is replete with marvels of technical and musical engineering. Bromberg dubs his bass onto a 78-r.p.m. record of “Jazz Me Blues” and “Washington And Lee Swing” that his late father had recorded in Tucson, elevating the sides while staying in musical character. And on “Sneaky Pete,” what sounds like Wes Montgomery’s guitar is actually Bromberg’s piccolo bass, a neat trick.

The music is just a swinging, in-your-face traditional jazz album with simple tunes that are easy to sing along with and remember, but have a foundation in hardcore ‘real’ jazz.
