Alfred Lora • Swingtett

Automatic Translation:
Alfred Lora (* 1931) is a German jazz violinist and light musician. His style was influenced by Stéphane Grappelli and Helmut Zacharias. He is one of the few German Sinti musicians who are also trained in music theory.

Lora comes from a family of German Sinti who were persecuted several times from 1933 during the Nazi dictatorship. When, in 1943, deportation to the Auschwitz concentration camp threatened due to a denunciation by neighbours, he fled Berlin with his relatives. After 1945 he studied music in Berlin, Munich and Nuremberg. His career as a professional musician began in the Ensemble Roy Romanderie, founded in the late 1940s. Lora became known to a wider public with the formation La Romanderie, founded in 1973 (which emerged from this ensemble); as solo instruments, guitar, violin, harp and an accordion were used for a traditional rhythm section. The group toured several times, had many television appearances and released the albums Swing Mamam Bruderherz - Musik deutscher Zigeuner (1975) and Gypsy Swing (1976).

Lora also founded the Alfred Lora New Swingtett, which performed bebop and swing with American singer Rachel Gould and included musicians such as Joe Bawelino. In 1985 he released the album Straight Ahead; in 1988 he appeared at the North Sea Jazz Festival. He is currently performing with his own groups and Swing Gypsy Rose.
