This CD includes the debut album of trumpeter Donald Byrd (1932-2013) originally issued as 'Byrd Jazz' on the TRANSITION label and recorded live at New World Stage, Detroit on August 23, 1955. With Byrd were other Detroit musicians including Yusef Lateef (tenor sax); Bernard McKinney (euphonium); Barry Harris (piano); Alvin Jackson (bass) & Frank Gant (drums). The seven varied performances include originals from Byrd, Dizzy Gillespie, Bud Powell, Barry Harris and one standard. This atmospheric live recording is a fascinating snapshot of hard bop in Detroit in the mid-1950s. There are two fine bonus studio tracks from the TRANSITION album 'Byrd's Eye View' recorded on December 2, 1955 with Donald Byrd (trumpet); Hank Mobley (tenor sax); Horace Silver (piano); Doug Watkins (bass) & Art Blakey (drums).
