The first quarter of the 21st century is drawing to a close, and with the world in the grip of uncertainty, the only prescription is a dose of feel-good soul jazz. Heavy on the blues, dripping with grease; direct, honest, and swinging. Just simple songs and unambiguous melodies, with grooving rhythms and no pretence.
In the summer of 2024, I made one of my regular visits to Vancouver to reunite with my very soulful co-conspirators Jesse Cahill and Nick Peck for a weekend at Frankie’s, the city’s legendary jazz club. After some cajoling, Van City tenor legend Cory Weeds agreed to join us on stage to form a two-horn quartet. Mics were set up, favourite tunes were chosen, cocktails were consumed; and with the Frankie’s crowd in fine fettle, urging us on with stomps and hollers, we laid down a set of hard-driving soul jazz.
In between shows, to balance the live feel, the cats and I descended into the murky shadows of a grungy basement studio, the carpeted walls dripping with years of accumulated funk. In keeping with the free blowing feel of the club gig, the studio session took place live, with no isolation and no safety net; and in the subterranean twilight we knocked out a set of swingers in a couple of hours, each tune needing only one or two takes.
Weeds and I are long-time friends and mutual admirers, and it was a gas to engage in a little sporting, good-natured combat, tipping our hats to the great two-tenor matchups of the past: Dexter Gordon and Herschel Evans, Gene Ammons and Sonny Stitt, Johnny Griffin and Lockjaw Davis. And while we were wailing, Peck & Cahill were getting down to serious business, lighting the fire and keeping it burning until the last note faded. The repertoire reveals our musical heroes– tunes penned by the giants of the tenor: Dexter, Stitt, James Moody; plus a couple of down-the-pipe originals for good measure.
The result is Horns Locked: a joyful collection of hard-swinging soul jazz that I hope will bring a smile to your face, a pat to your foot, and maybe even lift a load off your shoulders.

El primer cuarto del siglo XXI está llegando a su fin, y con el mundo sumido en la incertidumbre, la única receta es una dosis de soul jazz que te haga sentir bien. Con mucho blues, rebosante de energía; directo, honesto y con swing. Solo canciones sencillas y melodías sin ambigüedades, con ritmos groovy y sin pretensiones.
En el verano de 2024, hice una de mis visitas habituales a Vancouver para reunirme con mis compañeros Jesse Cahill y Nick Peck, dos músicos con mucho soul, para pasar un fin de semana en Frankie's, el legendario club de jazz de la ciudad. Tras insistirle un poco, la leyenda del saxo tenor de Vancouver, Cory Weeds, accedió a unirse a nosotros en el escenario para formar un cuarteto de dos instrumentos de viento. Se instalaron los micrófonos, se eligieron las canciones favoritas, se tomaron cócteles y, con el público de Frankie's en plena forma, animándonos con pisadas y gritos, tocamos un repertorio de soul jazz enérgico.
Entre concierto y concierto, para equilibrar la sensación de directo, los músicos y yo descendimos a las sombras turbias de un estudio sótano mugriento, con las paredes alfombradas empapadas de años de funk acumulado. En consonancia con la sensación de libertad del concierto en el club, la sesión de estudio se llevó a cabo en directo, sin aislamiento ni red de seguridad; y en el crepúsculo subterráneo grabamos un conjunto de temas swing en un par de horas, cada uno de los cuales solo necesitó una o dos tomas.
Weeds y yo somos amigos desde hace mucho tiempo y nos admiramos mutuamente, y fue muy divertido participar en un pequeño combate deportivo y amistoso, rindiendo homenaje a los grandes duelos de dos tenores del pasado: Dexter Gordon y Herschel Evans, Gene Ammons y Sonny Stitt, Johnny Griffin y Lockjaw Davis. Y mientras nosotros nos desahogábamos, Peck & Cahill se ponían manos a la obra, encendiendo el fuego y manteniéndolo vivo hasta que la última nota se desvaneció. El repertorio revela a nuestros héroes musicales: temas compuestos por los gigantes del saxo tenor: Dexter, Stitt, James Moody; además de un par de temas originales para redondear.
El resultado es Horns Locked: una alegre colección de soul jazz con mucho swing que espero que te haga sonreír, te haga mover los pies y tal vez incluso te quite un peso de encima.
