M.T.B. • Solid Jackson

The acronym M.T.B stands for pianist Brad Mehldau, the M; tenor saxophonist Mark Turner, the T, and guitarist Peter Bernstein, the B.

Twenty-four years ago the three of them, along with bassist c and drummer Leon Parker, recorded the album 'Consenting Adults'. Now, almost a quarter of a century later, they are back together again to release 'Solid Jackson'.

On this album there is a change with respect to the components of the first edition as drummer Bill Stewart replaces the initial Leon Parker.

Although the title of the album is M.T.B, they could well be called M.T.B.G.S. But, well, everyone has their own thing.

The truth is that this CD is very good, with five first-rate musicians who are willing to make an album as a team and not one of five individuals, something very frequent when musicians with very high egos get together thanks to a resume that is not only broad but also of quality.

Solid Jackson' is made up of eight thermals in which are interspersed both own compositions, two by Peter Bernstein ('The Things That Fall Away', 'Ditty For Dewey'), two by Mehldau ('Solid Jackson', 'Maury's Grey Wig') and one by Turner ('1946'); with the interpretation of rarely performed pieces by creators such as Hank Mobley ('Soft Impression'), Harold Land ('Ode to Angela') and Wayne Shorter ('Angola').

The final result of 'Solid Jackson' is an album installed in classic jazz but that looks to the future, that flows naturally and where the five musicians demonstrate, both collectively and individually, why they occupy the place they do in the collective imagination of today's jazz.

Now it only remains for M.T.B not to take another quarter of a century to release their third album together.
