This is a streaky affair, Hubert Laws's first recording as a leader in quite a few years. Half of the seven selections (including "It's So Crazy," "Shades of Light" and the title cut) find Laws performing a mixture of R&B and pop, with programmed rhythms and synthesizers making the music quite routine and predictable. However the other half of the CD (most notably Chopin's "Valse" and Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata," both arranged by the flutist) finds Laws adapting some classical works to jazz with guest artists who include pianists George Duke and Joe Sample, baritonist Ronnie Laws and drummer Ndugu Chancler. While that portion has more creativity, only Hubert Laws's most loyal fans will want this release.
