Review by Ken Dryden
Billy Taylor's first release on Capitol features his trio supported by an all-star big band led by Oliver Nelson. One gets the feeling that this LP of arrangements by Taylor and Nelson was made for radio airplay, as 11 of the 12 tracks are under three minutes in length, and the band is stuck playing riffs and unison lines behind Taylor's trio, so the lack of solos by players such as Phil Woods, Clark Terry, Joe Newman, Thad Jones, and Britt Woodman proves rather frustrating. Taylor's solos are swinging and to the point, though he doesn't really extend himself as much as he is capable of. This long out of print release is not essential but worth acquiring by fans of Billy Taylor.
