Johnny 'Hammond' Smith & Willis Jackson • Cooks With Gator Tail

"Cooks" is right – because with Johnny Hammond on organ, and Willis Jackson on tenor, the set's already got some mighty heavy power in the frontline! The sound here is more in that early 60s soul jazz style than the later one – with Johnny's organ open on all stops, flowing and fluttering nicely as Jackson blows with a mean, gritty, R&B-drenched kind of tone! The rest of the combo includes Eddie McFadden on guitar and Leo Stevens on drums – and tracks are short, but filled with a nice degree of energy. Jackson drops out on a moody version of "Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen", but the rest of the material is quartet based – and other titles include "Besame Mucho", "Delicious", "Neckbones", "Y'All", and "Good Nuff".
