El nombre de Don Swan ha sido sinónimo de música latinoamericana durante muchos años. Sus arreglos han provocado la popularidad de figuras como Xavier Cugat, Desi Arnaz y Pérez Prado.

Don Swan es casi tan latinoamericano como un wienerschnitzel. Nació en Wisconsin de origen alemán. Pero a pesar de su falta de sangre española, su sentimiento por la música latina es tan auténtico como el del mejor aficionado nativo o compositor.

En sus primeros treinta años, Don Swan se desempeño como arreglista de jazz. Fue durante este periodo cuando escribió su famoso “Dream a Little Dream of me” que ha aparecido en las listas de éxitos en tres ocasiones muy distantes entre sí.

En 1940, después de un estudio intensivo, decidió especializarse en la música latinoamericana y empezó a hacer arreglos para Xavier Cugat y su cantantes Miguelito Valdéz y Romay Lina. Don también realizo los arreglos de “Tico Tico“, que fue grabado por Cugie en 1940, se mantiene como uno de los de Maestro de todos los tiempos y los mas vendidos. Perez Prado y Desi Arnaz también aprovecharon los arreglos de Don Swan.

Don ha liderado sus propios grupos desde 1943. Con frecuencia pasaba unos meses cada año en Miami o en La Habana con el fin de mantener el dedo en el pulso constante cambio de compás de Los Ritmos latinos.
