One of e.s.t.’s greatest albums, and even arguably their ultimate work.

Following the posthumous release of Leucocyte in 2008, only months after the untimely death of pianist Esbjörn Svensson, it seemed as though that album would represent e.s.t.’s final studio statement. Now, nearly four years later, 301 has emerged. It was recorded during the same sessions, whilst the Swedish trio were touring around Asia and Australia. The disc is named after the 301 Studios in Sydney.

This is no sweeping-up of studio off-cuts. This is one of e.s.t.’s greatest albums, and even arguably their ultimate work, in every sense of the word. It represents a colossal achievement, as they take their final bow. The 2007 material might be extremely varied in tone and approach, partly out of necessity, doubtless governed by the available recordings, but this circumstance works to the album’s advantage. It’s a summation of where the trio had been, and also of where these perpetually evolving players were heading next.

Before his death, Svensson was actually involved in the editing down of the sessions into what might have been a double album. In the end, surviving members Magnus Öström and Dan Berglund elected to delay the release of 301. Regular sound engineer Åke Linton was also a key presence in the recording, editing and mixing process.

A sombre, portentous opener, Behind the Stars, has lone piano, merging into the extended Inner City, City Lights, one of the album’s two staggering epics. Delicately haunting bass enters almost unnoticed, Berglund bowing sparse traces as Öström’s drum brushes follow. It’s a stalking, brooding slow-builder, hovering at length, as Svensson’s piano becomes increasingly flecked with distortion effects, a sinuous bassline unthreading. The drums slink, and a massed choir-like effect develops, adding to the sustained tone of urgency.

The Left Lane operates with a more conventional jazz pianism, all the more striking when it follows on from its scuzzed predecessor. Svensson’s spirited, bluesy virtuosity is buoyed by springily tensed bass and drums. Suddenly, the threesome is venturing into the industrial loading bay, as Houston, the 5th heads towards electro-acoustic abstraction, bathed with sonic distress.

Once more, there’s a cut to pure piano grace with Part I of Three Falling Free. The lengthy Part II is the album’s other sheer classic ripper, amassing a percussive density that approaches an Afro-Latin feel, the bass distortion growing, a driving rhythm set up for Svensson’s epic gestures, propelling towards a gargantuan climax. Not surprisingly, this is followed by the tender ballad of The Childhood Dream, as all facets of e.s.t. are continually revealed.

La publicación de 301 (ACT/Karonte) es un motivo de alegría para todos los aficionados al jazz, ya que se trata de un nuevo disco del ya mítico trío E.S.T. , una de las mejores formaciones de toda la historia del jazz europeo.

La desaparición de E.S.T., por el fallecimiento de Esbjorn Svensson en un accidente mientras buceaba en el año 2008, ha dejado un boquete en el jazz mundial que todavía nadie ha sido capaz de llenar, y eso que para ello se han postulado un buen número de formaciones. Pero no hay manera.

Los álbumes publicados a título póstumo suelen tener, en general, mucho de oportunistas, pero, felizmente este no es el caso. Aquí está el trío en su pura esencia tocando lo que estaban haciendo en su último año de existencia.

Los temas que aparecen en ‘301’ se grabaron en las mismas sesiones donde se registró su último álbum, ‘Leucocyte’. Fueron un total nueve horas de grabación, y es de aquí de donde salen los temas que componen este disco.

El título del álbum hace referencia al estudio australiano donde se grabó el álbum. Los numerólogos y semióticos varios podrían hacer cábalas con ‘3 como 1’ o ‘3 menos 1’ o con el resultado de su suma, 4. Pero lo verdaderamente importante es la música, y ésta sigue siendo grande, e incluso a ratos muy grande.

‘301’ es una mezcla de electrónica y jazz con un importante elemento conceptual de rock progresivo. No todo en él es un acierto pero cuando dan en el clavo su música es de lo mejor que se puede escuchar en cualquier estilo musical. Y pueden llegar a ser memorables.

Resulta una pequeña maravilla sentir como van creciendo los temas, como se van desarrollando y de esta manera comprobar el grado de unidad al que había llegado estos tres suecos que están magníficos a lo largo de todo el disco.

Destacar algún tema de los siete que componen este ‘301’ podría acaso resultar un tanto injusto, pero ‘Three falling free part II’ y ‘The childhood dream’, una auténtica joya, un pedazo de balada monumental, podrían ser dos buenas candidatas para comprobar de lo que era capaz este trío.

Hay que disfrutar este disco, que acaso haga llorar a muchos por lo que se ha perdido, pero que va a llenar de alegría a todos los que alguna vez, ya fuese en disco o en directo, han disfrutado con la música de esta grandioso trío.

Desconozco si habrá más discos de E.S.T. (grabaciones en directo, tomas alternativas,…. lo habitual en estos casos), pero si tal cosa no sucediese ‘301’ es un magnífico colofón.

Y ya sólo queda dar las gracias a Esbjorn Svensson, Dan Berglund y Magnus Ostrom por los buenos momentos que han hecho pasar a los miles de aficionados al jazz.
