Review:
Organist Shirley Scott and her then-husband, tenor great Stanley Turrentine always made potent music together. This CD, which combines together the former Prestige LPs The Soul Is Willing and Soul Shoutin', finds "Mr. T." at his early peak, playing some intense yet always soulful solos on such pieces as Sy Oliver's "Yes Indeed," "Secret Love," and his memorable originals "The Soul Is Willing" and "Deep Down Soul." Scott, who found her own niche within the dominant Jimmy Smith style, swings hard throughout the set and (together with drummer Grassella Oliphant and either Major Holley or Earl May on bass) the lead voices play with such consistent enthusiasm that one would think these were club performances. Highly recommended.

Este CD, que combina los antiguos LPs de Prestige The Soul Is Willing y Soul Shoutin', encuentra a "Mr. T." en su mejor momento, tocando algunos solos intensos pero siempre conmovedores en piezas como "Yes Indeed" de Sy Oliver, "Secret Love", y sus memorables originales "The Soul Is Willing" y "Deep Down Soul". Scott, que encontró su propio nicho dentro del estilo dominante de Jimmy Smith, se balancea con fuerza a lo largo del set y (junto con el baterista Grassella Oliphant y el Mayor Holley o Earl May en el bajo) las voces principales tocan con un entusiasmo tan constante que uno pensaría que se trata de actuaciones en clubes. Gracias, Jorge. Ya sabes que tengo absoluta devoción por la música de esta mujer y que me repatea la mala suerte que tuvo. Talento desmedido, pero en el cuerpo de una mujer negra en una época en la que eso significaba ser candidato óptimo a víctima. Después el tema de las desavenencias con Turrentine por el tema del estrellato. Turrentine es un saxo tenor bastante eficaz, pero no tan buen músico como Scott. La improvisación armónica de ésta deja a la de quien fuera su marido en mantillas. Ni de lejos la misma visión, aunque Turrentine tenga inventiva, pero no es el mismo nivel.
