While most of the 51 tunes (1) performed here are Ellington standards/. favorites, there are also several rarely performed/recorded numbers, such as Walking With MY Honey, Court Session, Solid Old Man and Hop, Skip & Jump. These is solid playing throughout, and especially good solos by Johnny Hodges, Rex Stewart, Harry Carney, Lawrence Brown and singing by Joya Sherrill. The music is designed for both listening and dancing.

Are radio broadcast performances from the Spring and Fall of 1945, made at theatres and military installations in the eastern and mid-western U.S., where Duke Ellington was not only out to please his audience, but also raise money for the war effort (WWII was still on) by selling bonds via the radio broadcasts. The repertoire is mostly Ellington hits from the 40’s, plus some from the 30’s – all tailored to please the live audience (including the folks who wanted to dance) as well as the radio audience. The genre is solid Ellington swing, including some dance tunes. The many vocals included here (mainly by Joya Sherill) gave consolation to the audience during the war years. As is normally the case with Duke Ellington, even though one has heard the same tune many times, it is performed completely differently each time so that one never tires of hearing it. This music shows Duke Ellington in his prime, and is an important addition to the collection of Ellington fans. Of the 40 tunes on this double-CD, Sunny Side of The Street, Cotton Tail, Harlem Air Shaft and Warm Valley are among the best. The sound quality has been enhanced greatly through re-mastering.

The three sessions here were recorded in N.Y.C. in 1945 – 2 live sessions (Apollo Theatre and Zanzibar Club) plus one studio session (Radio City Music Hall). The 143 minutes (44 tunes) of music on this double-CD have never been released before. The repertoire is classic Ellington/Strayhorn material – including one Strayhorn medley and two suites (”Trio In Blue” and ”Perfume Suite”) - plus several tunes which were never recorded commercially. Recorded at the end of WWII, the purpose of these three programs – besides providing wonderful music – was to promote the sale of U.S. Treasury bonds to help the war effort. A major attribute of this double-CD is the inclusion of several tunes that Ellington never recorded commercially, like ”Fickle Fling”, ”Hollywood Hangover” and ”I’d Do It All Over Again”. The great musicianship and enthusiasm of Ellington’s orchestra includes countless fine solos – especially with Johnny Hodges and Rex Stewart – and features some great vocals by Al Hibbler, Kay Davis and Joya Sherrill.

I'd Do It All Over Again".

From the earliest days of the band, the Ellington Orchestra had ties to New England. In April 1924, they performed in Salem, Massachusetts during a period when the Hollywood Club was closed down due to one of their "fires." Another "fire" in February 1925, gave them the opportunity to perform in Haverhill, Massachusetts. The band had extended tours in the region in the summers of 1926 and 27. The 1926 tour was significant in that it was the first documented time that Boston born Harry Carney performed with the band. In May 1928, Cambridge Massachusetts native Johnny Hodges joined the band. In the ensuing years, sometimes there would be quick trips to Connecticut or Boston, or sometimes more extensive touring of the New England countryside. In August 1940, they appeared at Canobie Lake Park in Salem, New Hampshire, of which there are recordings from radio broadcasts. Symphony Hall in Boston was the site of the second performance of Black, Brown and Beige. During the months of July and August 1945, the Ellington Orchestra did extensive touring of New England, performing in many of the out-of-the-way places. Boston native Paul Gonsalves joining the band and the triumphs at the Newport Jazz Festival lay in the future. For now, let us turn to the July 14, 1945 broadcast in Boston
