egroj world: Duke Ellington and His Orchestra • The Treasury Shows - Vols. 1-4

ANNOUNCEMENT:

I will take a few days to decide which cloud hosting is the right one, at the end of last year the loss of Ulozto meant the loss of about 14,000 files, I hired 3 cloud services, which did not work, including Mega, which suspended the account, so I decided on Depositfiles, which has no storage limit, but unfortunately has the drawback of captchas and waiting. Most of the servers have restrictions with storage limit, daily downloads or bandwidth etc. and there is the inconvenience of creating 2 monthly accounts and managing them. So patience, while I figure out how to solve it. Thanks.

ANUNCIO:

Gracias.

This is Vol. 1 of a long series of releases of the complete Treasury Broadcasts from the mid-forties. Every second month a new double CD will be issued on a special label re-created for the occasion: D.E.T.S. for The Duke Ellington Treasury Shows (48 LPs were issued on a private pressing back in the 60’s). This is your only chance to get the complete Treasury series. Start collecting them now! It’s very lucky that these precious, well-recorded radio broadcasts have survived since the mid-40’s. They represent an important – yet elusive – period in the evolution of the U.S. as a whole and jazz in particular. On this double-CD compilation one gets a wonderful insight into how Duke Ellington, the patriot, and Duke Ellington, the famous band-leader, dealt with these complex times. As always, Ellington follows his heart – his own personal and musical convictions – and, as usual, the result is well-worth hearing. Throughout these five broadcasts there are numerous brilliant contributions by Duke’s sidemen, particularly Rex Stewart, Jimmy Hamilton, Joe Nanton, Johnny Hodges, Lawrence Brown, and singers Al Hibbler and Kay Davis.

This is Vol. 3 of a long series of releases of the complete Treasury Broadcasts from the mid forties. Contracted by the U.S. Treasury Dept. in 1945, Duke Ellington And His Orchestra performed a series of public service radio broadcasts to arouse patriotism and sell war bonds to help the U.S. military defeat the Japanese to end World War II. Besides performing music which was already well known his own as well as others' Ellington uses the programs presented here to test, check and refine new material, such as the tunes "Blutopia" and "Carnegie Blues." It's very lucky that these precious, well recorded radio broadcasts have survived. They represent an important, yet elusive, period in the evolution of jazz namely, the mid 40's. This 2 CD set features several star performers Johnny Hodges, Rex Stewart, AI Sears, Joya Sherrill and AI Hibbler, among others and especially trombonist Lawrence Brown.

WW II is over in Europe, but not Japan, and Duke Ellington is on the road, still patriotically selling US war bonds via live radio shows. The music here is from the Paradise Theatre in Detroit and the Regal Theatre in Chicago (May, 1945), and the Café Zanzibar (October, 1945). The recordings from the Café Zanzibar has never been released before now. The musical program presented here is blended for both listening and dancing, and includes many Duke Ellington standards, plus several new or rarely performed tunes. Even though this 2-CD presents a relatively “standard” version of the Duke Ellington Orch. from the mid-40’s, it is still the best big band in the U.S. and the music is full of tasty solos by Rex Stewart, Sam Nanton, Cat Anderson, Johnny Hodges, Joya Sherrill and the Duke, himself.
