About of Album: Through the course of over 50 years Karsten Vogel has had an immense impact on the Danish music scene. His personal and recognizable Saxophone style has been at the front of more than 70 jazz- and jazz-related releases.
In the last couple of years Vogel has released two albums, one with focus on Vogel’s great inspiration Charlie Parker, and one in cooperation with Per Aage Brandt, exploring their avantgarde roots. Now, Karsten Vogel is ready to release a new album with focus on his compositions and especially on his Saxophone playing. The album, entitled This Is It, should be seen as the completion of Vogels journey within music, as it is the final expression of what his great storytelling can amount to. Consequently, the are no plans for future recording sessions.
This Is It contains 9 songs, each with their own settings, but with a crew of experienced musicians present throughout the album. Kenneth Knudsen contributes and emphasizes why he enjoys a reputation as a keyboard-guru. Swedish pianist Daniel Fridell also contributes with both piano and keyboards, and Klaus Menzer and Thomas Ovesen make up the inspirational and varied rhythm section. Also present on the album is Ole Streenberg who contributes with drums on “Montmartre” and Louise Nipper who does vocals on “Second of May”. Nipper, Menzer and Knudsen are also credited with the co-producer role. https://www.storyvillerecords.com/products/this-is-it-1014321

Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine The material that comprises It Just Got to Be was recorded during the same sessions as Here We Come, and like that album, this record has its share of romantic standards, including "Stella By Starlight" and "The Nearness of You." It Just Got to Be also captures the Three Sounds in the mood to stretch out and improvise a little (ironically, two of the three original compositions are the shortest songs on the album). The performances throughout the record are predictably swinging and enjoyable, even if they find the trio taking no stylistic chances. That lack of adventure doesn't matter, though -- the Three Sounds excel at making unpretentious, unabashedly enjoyable mainstream jazz, and there's something endearing about their ability to produce a body of work of consistently high quality.https://www.allmusic.com/album/it-just-got-to-be-mw0000761359

Born May 24 1938, Kingston, Jamaica. Died September 8, 2016, Miami,
Florida, USA. After following original selecter The Great Sebastian he
was hired by Clement "Coxsone" Dodd to help on his Down Beat sound
system, eventually helping Dodd identify the singles that Duke Reid was
importing for his rival system and assisting production of his
recordings. His very first recording session in 1960 produced "Oh
Carolina", one of the all-time classics of Jamaican music, with vocals
by the Folkes Brothers and added musical accompaniment from Count Ossie.
Inventive and innovative for the times, the record still sounds every
bit as exciting. Soon went on to establish his own own Voice Of The
People sound system, record label and shop.
Buster produced countless records featuring either himself or virtually
every top act of the time backed by the Prince Buster's All Stars,
initially Buster's Group, defining from blues/shuffle origins a huge
contribution to the ska era with classic after rousing classic, first on
his Wildbells and Buster Wild Bells labels, followed by Voice Of The
People, Soulsville Center, Islam, Olive Blossom Records, Prince Buster
and Prince Buster Records Shack labels, which were concurrently released
in the UK on Blue Beat, Fab and his own name UK label, moving gradually
into rocksteady and reggae. Prince Buster also enjoyed repeated success
thanks to the undying respect bestowed by generations of ska
revivalists that saw him make a comeback virtually every decade,
starting with the ska revival craze of 1979-80 when UK groups Madness,
The Specials, The Beat, The Selecter and Bad Manners all paid tribute.

DeVos is an American jazz guitarist whose playing style is similar to
that of Kenny Burrell and Wes Montgomery. He is most noted for his work
with organist Richard Holmes. Although no one in the family played a
musical instrument, deVos spent much of his youth listening to the big
band and blues records that his parents owned. He picked up the guitar
at age twelve and within weeks he was memorizing guitar solos from these
albums and performing professionally at age thirteen. As a teenager, he
toured nationwide with a famous rock group, but chose jazz over rock in
his twenties saying, "I needed more chord changes..." DeVos started
in jazz as a student of Harry Leahy and Dennis Sandole. In 1970, when
Sandole sent his leading students out to audition for the organist Trudy
Pitts, deVos was chosen to step in for Pat Martino. DeVos went on to be
the guitarist for groups led by Richard "Groove" Holmes, featuring
saxophone legend Sonny Stitt, and Jimmy McGriff and Hank Crawford. He
later toured and recorded extensively with organist Charles Earland's
group that included Eric Alexander and Jim Rotondi. He further developed
his compositional and harmonic skills playing with many jazz greats
outside the organ trio genre. Currently deVos plays with an organ
trio with whom he has released the CD, Shifting Sands. This album spent
28 weeks in the top twenty on Jazz Week's Top 50 Nationwide Jazz Airplay
Chart.

Pete Oxley and Nicolas Meier have already stretched the confines of the jazz-guitar duet by their broad world-musical interests and exotic range of instruments – as they memorably revealed on last year’s Chasing Tales album. Half of this typically melodious two-album set revisits that duo format, with bass and drums added on the second disc. The pair’s favourite sources – Pat Methenyesque songs, Hot Club swing, Latin cool, Turkish music – are prominent again, with Indian influences also present in the sitar-like swerves of fretless instruments, alongside synth guitars mimicking brass, and rugged rockers with mediterranean melodies that spawn clamorous improv on Meier’s oud-like glissentar guitar. One of the few unequivocally jazzy tracks, the hip and slinky Purple Panther, lets Oxley and Meier play fewer notes and let the swing groove do the work, opening spaces that this genially busy set could have used a shade more of. Review by Scott Yanow Recorded shortly before Al di Meola decided to de-emphasize his electric guitar in favor of his acoustic counterpart, this live set does a fine job of summing up his first six years of recordings. Four of the six numbers (all but "Nena" and "Advantage") were previously recorded by the pacesetting fusion guitarist. With strong and stimulating contributions made by keyboardist Jan Hammer, electric bassist Anthony Jackson, drummer Steve Gadd, percussionist Mingo Lewis, and second keyboardist Victor Godsey (some additional keyboards and percussion were overdubbed later in the studio), di Meola is typically stunning on such originals as "Elegant Gypsy Suite" and "Race with Devil on Spanish Highway." https://www.allmusic.com/album/tour-de-force-live-mw0000187929

Born in Florida and based in New York, Michael Thomas is a versatile alto saxophonist/bass clarinetist who studied with Jerry Bergonzi, George Garzone and Miguel Zenón. He takes all those influences and more into his new album, Natural Habitat, whose lineup includes pianist/keyboardist Julian Shore, bassist Hans Glawischnig, and drummer Johnathan Blake.
The true-to-name album reveals deep connections to the cities of Boston and New York, a point that also transpires on “Two Cities”, a grounded and yet deliciously far-reaching piece that flows with an additive meter signature (5+5+5+6). Triumphant tenor melodies slide through the tapestry formed by Shore’s chord structure and the compelling rhythmic drive of Glawischnig and Blake. This is the most powerful piece on the record.
If the ballad “Fourth” and the lengthened “Harbor” didn’t really impress me with their acoustic warmth, then the true simmer and boil of Thomas’ composing come to the fore with titles such as “Demise”, another challenging preparation highlighted by nifty improvisations from Rhodes and bass clarinet; and “Float”, an intricate post-bop excursion where dancing bass lines and responsive drumming help shaping passages in 7/4 and 5/4. On the latter piece, the theme is revived halfway, sandwiched between the piano and alto statements.
With the bass clarinet at the helm of the melody, “Different Times” relies on rich harmonic movements to create a diaphanous waltz propelled by scrupulous bass lines and sensitive brushwork. What we have here diverges from the longitudinal perspective offered in the title cut, a straight 4/4 swinging blowout carried out with dynamic interplay. The richly contoured soloing from Thomas and Blake becomes the main attraction on this one.
Buyers of the CD have access to a downloadable bonus track called “For Now”. Pity that Thomas’ outspoken solo is cut short exactly when reaching a climax. Creative spark can be found in an album that gets better and better as it progresses. https://jazztrail.net/blog/michael-thomas-natural-habitat-album-review
Impressive and fresh post bop sounds are delivered by Michael Thomas, playing both alto sax and bass clarinet with his ensemble of Julian Shore/p-key, Hans Glawishnig/b and Johnathan Blake/dr on an album of originals. His tone is warm and calming, working well on the upbeat “Float” and gliding over Blake’s cadence on “First” while gentle and delicate over Glawishnig’s bass on “Fourth.” On bass clarinet, the dreamy “Different Time” has a palpable texture, while there’s a fusiony feel with Shore’s keyboards on the moody “Demise”. Classical ivories give sparkling support for Thomas’ alto on “No Words” and the team simmers on the swinging “Two Cities”. Impressive modernity. https://www.jazzweekly.com/2021/04/michael-thomas-natural-habitat/
Developing as an artist requires an incredible amount of study and hard work honing skills. During this process, the burgeoning artist will naturally begin to find areas in which he or she feels more comfortable, their comfort zone. This concept reaches beyond a physical location. It can also apply to material and communal elements in the creation of art.
Saxophonist/bass clarinetist/composer Michael Thomas seems to have found his musical domain once he settled in New York City. His new recording, Natural Habitat, illustrates how his path to the City has placed him in a perfect spot, both physically and mentally, to create the best art that he can.
Originally from Florida, Thomas grew up playing classical saxophone and picking up clarinet and flute as doubling instruments in high school. He pursued music as an undergrad at the University of Miami and then went to Boston to get his masters at the New England Conservatory. His three years in Boston would be the most important years in the young reedist’s development.

Review by Scott Yanow This somewhat obscure recording by the bop-oriented altoist Herb Geller features him in a 1958 quintet with vibraphonist Victor Feldman, pianist Walter Norris, bassist Leroy Vinnegar and drummer Anthony Vazley. Other than a session for Atco, this was Geller's last American album until 1993; it would be 1975 before he recorded as a leader again. Geller is in fine form on three of his originals and two standards ("Change Partners" and "It Might as Well Be Spring"). Originally cut for Jubilee, this Fresh Sound CD is part of an extensive series that has brought back many forgotten dates from the 1950s. Bop collectors will enjoy this one. https://www.allmusic.com/album/stax-of-sax-mw0000869130
Biography by Scott Yanow Herb Geller was a veteran of the Los Angeles jazz scene of the 1950s who played better than ever by the turn of the millennium. Geller played in 1946 with Joe Venuti's Orchestra, and in 1949 he traveled to New York to play with Claude Thornhill. In 1951 he moved back to L.A. and married the excellent bop pianist Lorraine Walsh. Geller was a fixture in L.A., playing with Billy May (1952), Maynard Ferguson, Shorty Rogers, Bill Holman, and Chet Baker, among others; jamming with Clifford Brown and Max Roach (1954); and leading a quartet that included his wife (1954-1955). Lorraine Geller's sudden death in 1958 eventually resulted in the altoist deciding to leave the country to escape his grief. He played with Benny Goodman off and on between 1958-1961, spent time in Brazil, and in 1962 moved to Berlin. Geller worked in German radio orchestras for 30 years, played in European big bands, and continued to grow as a musician, although he was pretty much forgotten in the U.S. From the early '90s into the 2000s, Herb Geller returned to the States on a more regular basis, and he recorded tributes to Al Cohn and Arthur Schwartz for Hep. Geller also recorded as a leader in the 1950s for EmArcy, Jubilee, and Atco, and in his later years for Enja, Fresh Sound, and VSOP. Herb Geller died in Hamburg, Germany on December 19, 2013; he was 85 years old. https://www.allmusic.com/artist/herb-geller-mn0000677067/biography

About The Album The title of What Comes Next, the latest album by guitarist Peter Bernstein, certainly echoes a question that we’ve all been asking ourselves in recent months. Locked away, wary of leaving the house during a global pandemic, divided by politics and protests, all during a most vital U.S. Presidential election year – any one of those issues would spell an uncertain future.
But look again at that title: Bernstein very deliberately left off the question mark. While the interrogative continues to apply, especially for musicians in a world without gigs, Bernstein set out to make a statement as well. His What Comes Next not only arrives in the midst of quarantine but was recorded during the lockdown as well. With what once was the simple act of gathering four stellar musicians in a room to play music together, this album points a musical way forward in the way that only the most incisive jazz can.
“Without the question mark, What Comes Next implies that you have some idea, some intention,” Bernstein explains. “That seems like such a huge concept now, but it’s inherent to the very idea of playing jazz. It’s the basic question that we deal with all the time when we’re given the freedom to improvise: now what do I play? What note should come next? Where are we in the conversation? With everybody’s lives being put on hold, that idea can be extended beyond the fact of just playing music.”
The timing was especially fortuitous as three months of isolation had given Bernstein plenty of opportunity to compose some new music. With tour schedules and conflicting dates hardly being an issue, Bernstein assembled a dream quartet for the date. He’s joined by Grammy-winning pianist Sullivan Fortner (Cécile McLorin Salvant, Roy Hargrove), drummer and frequent collaborator Joe Farnsworth (McCoy Tyner, Pharoah Sanders) and for the first time on one of the guitarist’s own sessions by the always exquisite bassist Peter Washington (Bill Charlap, Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers).
“We all kept our masks on,” Bernstein recalls, “It felt a little strange at first, but I’m just thankful for the chance to try and create something with musicians I love. It was such a beautiful day.”
What Comes Next is available on deluxe CD album (8-panel gatefold digipak) and in audiophile 96khz/24bit digital download format. All formats feature original photography by Jimmy and Dena Katz and liner notes by Steve Futterman. https://smokesessionsrecords.com/shop/albums/what-comes-next/

Dutch violinist Tim Kliphuis is best known as a highly skilled exponent of the Hot Club swing style associated with Grappelli and Reinhardt, but this album attempts to focus instead on world acoustic music, including the unusual amalgamation of a Scottish jig with African Soukous on ‘Couscous and Butter’.
His collaborators here are all Scottish (or based here), guitarist Nigel Clark, pianist David Newton, bassist Roy Percy and percussionist Sandro Ciancio. The global tour takes in shades of Latin, Cuban, South American and African music, as well as material from closer to home, including compositions by both Grappelli and Reinhardt, a version of the 60s pop hit ‘Don’t Sleep In The Subway’ and the folk tune ‘The Cuckoo’s Nest’, all dispatched in engagingly light-fingered, virtuoso fashion. https://www.list.co.uk/article/29832-tim-kliphuis-acoustic-voyage/
Award-winning
Dutch violinist Tim Kliphuis has created a brand new style that
embraces classical, gypsy jazz and folk. Hailed as a ‘current-day
improvising Paganini’, his inclusive approach to music has united
audiences and is influencing a new generation of string players.
After
his master’s degree in classical violin at the Amsterdam Conservatoire,
Kliphuis studied with the European Sinti gypsies. He recorded and
toured with gypsy guitar legends Fapy Lafertin, The Rosenberg Trio and
Angelo Debarre.
An invitation to the Richard Strauss Festival in
Germany kick-started Kliphuis’ crossover career, celebrating a ‘total
music’ without stylistic barriers. He performed for the Dutch King at
the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, for Celtic Connections Glasgow, at the
Django Reinhardt Festival in Samois-sur-Seine and toured America, South
Africa and Russia extensively.
In 2015, The Tim Kliphuis Trio
(Nigel Clark, guitar and Roy Percy, double bass) premiered Vivaldi-based
‘Reflecting the Seasons’ which was recorded on Sony Classical in 2016;
‘Brandenburg’, based on Bach, and the Kliphuis Violin Concerto followed
in 2018.
In between Trio tours and orchestral projects, the Tim
Kliphuis Sextet with Dutch string players Janneke van Prooijen, Frank
Brakkee and Charles Watt continues to wow audiences across Europe: a
colourful crossover approach to classical and jazz music.
Tim
Kliphuis and his Trio have shared the stage with Les Paul, Richard
Galliano, Frankie Gavin and Martin Hayes, as well as the Netherlands and
Tallinn Chamber Orchestras, The Hague and Cape Town Philharmonic and
Sinfonietta Amsterdam.
Kliphuis is an in-demand educator at
festivals, competitions and conservatoires. He wrote the best-selling
book “Gypsy Jazz Violin” and teaches improvisation at the Amsterdam
Conservatoire, at his own Academy for Improvising Strings, and the gypsy
jazz summer school Grappelli-Django Camp. He is a DPA Microphones and
Pirastro Strings artist.

Fapy Lafertin, The Rosenberg Trio y Angelo Debarre.
guitarra y Roy Percy, contrabajo) estrenó 'Reflecting the Seasons',
basado en Vivaldi, que se grabó en Sony Classical en 2016;
'Brandenburg', basado en Bach, y el Concierto para violín de Kliphuis le
Janneke van Prooijen, Frank Brakkee y Charles Watt continúa cautivando

Rightly called the saddest story in rock 'n' roll history, this
Creedence biography—newly updated with stories from band members,
producers, business associates, close friends, and families—recounts the
tragic and triumphant tale of one of America’s most beloved bands.
Hailed as the great American rock band from 1968 to 1971, Creedence
Clearwater Revival captured the imaginations of a generation with
classic hits like “Proud Mary,” “Down on the Corner,” “Green River,”
“Born on the Bayou,” and “Who’ll Stop the Rain.” Mounting tensions among
bandmates over vibrant guitarist and lead vocalist John Fogerty’s
creative control led to the band's demise. Tracing the lives of four
musicians who redefined an American roots-rock sound with unequaled
passion and power, this music biography exposes the bitter end and
abandoned talent of a band left crippled by debt and dissension.
Throughout his life, renowned and prolific composer Johann Sebastian
Bach articulated his views as a composer in purely musical terms; he was
notoriously reluctant to write about his life and work. Instead, he
methodically organized certain pieces into carefully designed
collections. These benchmark works, all of them without parallel or
equivalent, produced a steady stream of transformative ideas that stand
as paradigms of Bach’s musical art.
In this companion volume to his Pulitzer Prize–finalist biography, Johann Sebastian Bach: The Learned Musician,
leading Bach scholar Christoph Wolff takes his cue from his famous
subject. Wolff delves deeply into the composer’s own rich selection of
collected music, cutting across conventional boundaries of era, genre,
and instrument. Emerging from a complex and massive oeuvre, Bach’s Musical Universe is a focused discussion of a meaningful selection of compositions―from the famous Well-Tempered Clavier, violin and cello solos, and Brandenburg Concertos to the St. Matthew Passion, Art of Fugue, and B-minor Mass.
Unlike
any study undertaken before, this book details Bach’s creative process
across the various instrumental and vocal genres. This array of
compositions illustrates the depth and variety at the essence of the
composer’s musical art, as well as his unique approach to composition as
a process of imaginative research into the innate potential of his
chosen material. Tracing Bach’s evolution as a composer, Wolff
compellingly illuminates the ideals and legacy of this giant of
classical music in a new, refreshing light for everyone, from the
amateur to the virtuoso.
The myriad ways in which colour and light have been adapted and applied
in the art, architecture, and material culture of past societies is the
focus of this interdisciplinary volume. Light and colour’s iconographic,
economic, and socio-cultural implications are considered by established
and emerging scholars including art historians, archaeologists, and
conservators, who address the variety of human experience of these
sensory phenomena. In today’s world it is the norm for humans to be
surrounded by strong, artificial colours, and even to see colour as
perhaps an inessential or surface property of the objects around us.
Similarly, electric lighting has provided the power and ability to
illuminate and manipulate environments in increasingly unprecedented
ways. In the context of such a saturated experience, it becomes
difficult to identify what is universal, and what is culturally specific
about the human experience of light and colour. Failing to do so,
however, hinders the capacity to approach how they were experienced by
people of centuries past. By means of case studies spanning a broad
historical and geographical context and covering such diverse themes as
architecture, cave art, the invention of metallurgy, and medieval
manuscript illumination, the contributors to this volume provide an
up-to-date discussion of these themes from a uniquely interdisciplinary
perspective. The papers range in scope from the meaning of colour in
European prehistoric art to the technical art of the glazed tiles of the
Shah mosque in Isfahan. Their aim is to explore a multifarious range of
evidence and to evaluate and illuminate what is a truly enigmatic topic
in the history of art and visual culture.
French-German painter Count Balthasar
Klossowski de Rola (1908-2001), known as Balthus, shocked the Parisian
art world in 1934 with his dreamy, sensual, Neo-Classical portraits of
nymphets at a time when Surrealism and abstraction were de rigueur. As a
provocateur, Balthus was often scorned; as an artist, he was widely
embraced as a prodigy. In response to critics of his realist style,
Balthus said: "The real isn’t what you think you see. One can be a
realist of the unreal and a figurative painter of the invisible." His
erotic, poetic paintings live on as examples of the best figurative work
of the modern era.
Review by Ken Dryden The Mitchell-Ruff Duo, with pianist Dwike Mitchell and bassist/French horn player Willie Ruff, had only been together for two years by the time this LP was made. Their piano/bass improvisations of several standards, including "Angel Eyes," "Thou Swell," and "Gone With the Wind," are masterpieces. But even more intriguing are the piano/French horn duets, especially the captivating take of Duke Jordan's "Jordu" and classical works by Ravel (Pavanne) and Debussy (My Reverie). They collaborated in the composition of "Fugue for Lulu," an intricate Bach-like fugue for piano and bass. Although the amusing cartoon front cover may give the impression that this is a live date at the original Birdland club, these are studio recordings. This LP on the long-defunct Forum label will be rather difficult to acquire. https://www.allmusic.com/album/appearing-nightly-mw0000871491

For most of the second half of the '60s, Sergio Mendes was the
top-selling Brazilian artist in the United States, charting huge hit
singles and LPs that regularly made the Top Five. His records with his
group, Brasil '66, regularly straddled the domestic pop and
international markets in America, getting played heavily on AM radio
stations, both rock and easy listening, and he gave his label, A&M,
something to offer light jazz listeners beyond the work of the company's
co-founder, Herb Alpert. During this period, he also became an
international music star and one of the most popular musicians in South
America.
Born the son of a physician in Niteroi, Brazil, Mendes began studying
music at the local conservatory while still a boy, with the intention of
becoming a classical pianist. He was living in Rio de Janeiro as the
bossa nova craze hit in the mid- to late '50s, and at age 15, he
abandoned classical music in favor of bossa nova. Mendes began spending
time with other young Brazilian musicians in Rio de Janeiro, absorbing
the musical ferment around him in the company of such figures as Antonio
Carlos Jobim and João Gilberto. Their company was augmented by the
periodic visits of American jazz giants such as Stan Getz, Dizzy
Gillespie, Charlie Byrd, Paul Winter, Roy Eldridge, and Herbie Mann.
Mendes became the leader of his own group, the Sexteto Bossa Rio, and
was heard with them by many visiting musicians. He made his first
recording, Dance Moderno, in 1961 on the Philips Records label. By 1962,
Mendes and his band were playing at Birdland in New York in an
impromptu performance with Cannonball Adderley (who was officially on
the bill). Mendes and Adderley cut an album together for Capitol Records
that was released later that year.
His early music, represented on albums like Bossa Nova York and Girl
from Ipanema, was heavily influenced by Antonio Carlos Jobim, on whose
recording Mendes worked. Mendes liked what he had found on his visit to
New York, and in 1964 he moved to the United States, initially to play
on albums with Jobim and Art Farmer, and formed Brasil '65 the following
year. The group recorded for Capitol without attracting too much notice
at first. In 1966, however, Mendes and his band -- renamed Brasil '66
-- were signed to A&M Records and something seemed to click between
the group and its audience.
The group, consisting in its first A&M incarnation of Mendes on
keyboards, Bob Matthews on bass, João Palma on drums, Jose Soares as
percussionist, Lani Hall (aka Mrs. Herb Alpert and A&M's co-founder)
on vocals, and Janis Hansen on vocals, was successful upon the release
of its first album for the label, with its mix of light jazz, a bossa
nova beat, and contemporary soft pop melodies. Their self-titled debut
LP rose to number six nationally, propelled by the presence of the
single "Mas Que Nada." Their second album, Equinox, yielded a trio of
minor hits, "Night and Day," "Constant Rain (Chove Chuva)," and "For
Me," but their third, Look Around, rose to number five behind a number
three single of the group's cover of the Beatles' "Fool on the Hill" and
an accompanying hit with "Scarborough Fair," based on the Simon &
Garfunkel version of the folk song. Crystal Illusions, from 1969,
featured a version of Otis Redding's "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay"
and the hit single "Pretty World." Depending upon one's sensibilities,
these covers -- especially "Fool on the Hill" and "Scarborough Fair" --
were either legitimate, internationalized pop versions of the originals,
or they were "elevator music."
During this period, Mendes also made several recordings for Atlantic
Records separate from his A&M deal, principally aimed at a light
jazz audience, and several of them in association with Jobim. Art
Farmer, Phil Woods, Hubert Laws, and Claire Fisher were among the jazz
figures who appeared on these records, which never remotely attracted
the same level of interest or sales as his records with Brasil '66.
Mendes successfully walked a fine line between international and
domestic audiences for most of the late '60s until the end of the
decade. Ye-Me-Le was notably less successful than its predecessors, and
its single, "Wichita Lineman," was only a minor hit. Mendes seemed to
lose his commercial edge with the turn of the decade, and his next two
A&M albums: Stillness, a folk-based collection that contained covers
of Joni Mitchell's "Chelsea Morning" and Stephen Stills' "For What It's
Worth," and Primal Roots, an album of traditional Brazilian music,
failed to make any impression on the charts whatsoever.
The group moved to the much smaller Bell Records label in 1973, and
then Mendes jumped to Elektra for his first official solo album, Sergio
Mendes. He relaunched his recording career two years later with Sergio
Mendes & Brasil '77 to little avail, and then, after a five-year
layoff from the public eye, Mendes returned to A&M in 1982. His 1983
comeback album, Sergio Mendes, was his first Top 40 album in nearly a
decade and a half, and was accompanied by his biggest chart single ever,
"Never Gonna Let You Go," which hit number four. Since then, Mendes has
had limited chart success with the single "Alibis" and the LP Confetti.
He remained a popular figure internationally, even when his record
sales slumped in America, as evidenced by the fact that his entire
A&M catalog (and much of his Atlantic work) from the '60s has been
reissued on CD in Japan. Indeed, his popularity in the rest of the
world, versus America, was even the basis for a comic vignette in one
episode of the television series Seinfeld.
During the '90s, Mendes performed with a new group, Brasil '99, and more
recently, Brasil 2000, and has been integrating the sounds of Bahian
hip-hop into his music. In 1997, A&M's British division released a
remastered double-CD set of the best of Mendes' music from his first
seven years on the label. Most of Mendes' back catalog was reissued as
the 21st century dawned, and in 2006, Concord Records released Timeless,
his first album of newly recorded material in eight years. A mere two
years later, Encanto appeared, including co-productions from will.i.am
of Black Eyed Peas. A third album on Concord, Bom Tempo, was released in
2010. After appearances at numerous festivals and a global tour, Mendes
took a short break before beginning to record again. He signed to
Sony's revived OKeh imprint and cut a completely new set of songs in Los
Angeles, Salvador, and Bahia, with a host of special guests and old
friends, including John Legend, will.i.am., and Brazilian artists such
as Carlinhos Brown, with whom he cut the first single, "One Nation,"
issued on One Love, One Rhythm: The 2014 FIFA World Cup Official Album.
Mendes' album Magic was released in September.

Byrd, Paul Winter, Roy Eldridge y Herbie Mann.
from Ipanema, estaba fuertemente influenciada por Antonio Carlos Jobim,
Day", "Constant Rain (Chove Chuva)" y "For Me", pero su tercero, Look
Simon & Garfunkel. Crystal Illusions, de 1969, presentó una versión
de "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" de Otis Redding y el exitoso
sencillo "Pretty World". Dependiendo de la sensibilidad de cada uno,
estas portadas - especialmente "Fool on the Hill" y "Scarborough Fair" -
Morning" de Joni Mitchell y "For What It's Worth" de Stephen Stills, y
Never Gonna Let You Go",
Confetti.
Encanto, incluyendo coproducciones de will.i.am de Black Eyed Peas.
