Odell Brown • Plays Otis Redding

Review by Jason Ankeny
After splitting with longtime backing combo the Organ-Izers, Odell Brown teamed with arranger Gene Barge to craft this fitting tribute to fallen soul icon Otis Redding. The all-instrumental set implicitly celebrates Redding the songwriter, not the singer, and Barge's thoughtful large-group charts make sure the music's transition from Memphis R&B to Chicago soul-jazz goes off without a hitch. While Brown delivers some of his funkiest, most inspired Hammond solos on cuts like "Hard to Handle" and "Respect," the overall mood here is more somber than on previous outings -- it's clear Redding's tragic death affected him greatly, and the album channels that grief to create something truly heartfelt.
