Duke Ellington fue extraordinariamente generoso al permitir que los miembros de esta banda grabaran por su cuenta mientras trabajaban para él. Esta generosidad es algo por lo que todos debemos estar agradecidos. De lo contrario, nunca habríamos tenido el placer de escuchar a pequeños grupos encabezados por Johnny Hodges, Barney Bigard y Rex Stewart. Este álbum fue grabado originalmente por un grupo de estrellas de Ellington en 1958 para el Bertelsmann Record Club de Alemania. Finalmente fue publicado en los Estados Unidos en CD por RCA Victor el año pasado como parte de la serie Classic Edition de esa marca. Durante este tiempo, Ellington estuvo en una extensa gira europea que lo llevó a Inglaterra, Noruega, Francia, Suecia y Holanda. Los C-Jam All Stars tenían a Clark Terry, Paul Gonsalves, Jimmy Woode y Sam Woodyard. Pero en lugar de Ellington sentado en el piano, un pianista local de no poca habilidad, Carlos Diernhammer, fue llamado. No sólo era un consumado pianista, sino también un compositor. Uno de sus logros más notables fue la partitura de la película de terror de culto alemana The Death Ray of Dr. Mabuse.
La lista de reproducción es una mezcla de piezas de Ellington, un par de estándares y cinco melodías escritas por Terry o Gonsalves. Estos últimos son poco más que arreglos de cabeza basados en el blues que sirven como plataforma para el arte en solitario de cada uno de los miembros del grupo. Todo es bueno. Pero es el material más familiar el que atrapa la atención. Gonsalves hace lo suyo con "Diminuendo y Crescendo in Blue". Aunque no se acerca a los 27 coros de la actuación del Festival de Jazz de Newport en 1956, sigue generando chispas que no muestran ningún signo de aburrimiento que pudiera haberse producido debido a las muchas veces que tuvo que tocar la melodía a causa de Newport. "I Cover the Waterfront" se ve realzado por una encantadora trompeta silenciada de Terry que se convierte en un suave tenor melódico de Gonsalves, lo que hace que este tema sea especialmente atractivo. Pero los solos no son lo único bueno en este set. Hay un grupo de ritmo excepcional que toca como en "It Don't Mean a Thing (if It Ain't Got That Swing)" (No significa nada si no tiene ese swing). Siempre hay algo especial en el soporte rítmico de Woode y Woodyard. Su larga asociación con Ellington le dio a estos músicos la habilidad de anticipar cuál iba a ser el movimiento de cada solista durante sus extemporizaciones extendidas. Esta familiaridad les permitió satisfacer sin problemas las necesidades de los instrumentistas.
Ha pasado mucho tiempo, pero por fin podemos disfrutar de esta sesión alemana en Estados Unidos. Sólo una queja. Sólo hay 35 minutos de música. Pero muy recomendable de todos modos.
