ReplyDeleteEn la primera mitad de los años 80 Marienthal andaba muy activo. En el 82-83 aparece en un spot comercial de refrescos y se convierte en una sensación. Fue requerido como reclamo algunas big bands, entre ellas, la de Buddy Rich, cuando éste tocaba sólo un par de números finales y precisaba de alguien para entretener el resto del tiempo.
Corea aprovechó para meterlo en su grupo a mediados de los 80. Corea estaba ya entonces acabado, sin ideas, chupando de unos y otros. Ante la posibilidad de que se largue por su cuenta termina produciendo "Voices Of The Heart", primer álbum en solitario de Marienthal, que aprovecha el tirón al Lp para largarse.
El tipo siempre ha sido legal en acerca de la paternidad de su estilo. Él pretendió obtener la sonoridad de "Shotgun" de Junior Walker, un tema del 1965 que entró en las listas del R&B y que Marienthal escuchaba una y otra vez de niño. Se topó sin querer con una "bella durmiente", un tema en el que ni siquiera J. Walker reparó, pues lo que éste quiso fue aparecer como vocalista y ensayó unos coros con el saxo que realzaran la letra. Y a Marienthal, siendo niño, oía una y otra vez el saxo de JW y quiso convertir ese modo de tocar en su propio estilo, cuya sonoridad se convierte en un sello de identidad de los años 80.
A punto estuvo de pisarle el invento Clarence Clemons en 1975. Intercala un solo en “Jungeland” del “Born to Run” de Bruce Springsteen. Pero Clemons usa el saxo tenor y no es nada veloz. Consecuencias de llevar una rigurosa dieta a base de marihuana. Encima también quiere ser cantante como J. Walker y canta como un tío que yo tuve en Granada, que ni tío ni nada.
