Bill Black (bajista de la primera banda de Elvis Presley) formó el Combo de Bill Black en 1959. La alineación original era Black (bajo), Joe Lewis Hall (piano), Reggie Young (guitarra), Martin Willis (saxofón) y Jerry Arnold (batería). Hubo varios cambios de personal durante los dos años siguientes (Hank Hankins, Chips Moman o Tommy Cogbill en la guitarra; Ace Cannon en el saxo; Carl McVoy o Bobby Emmons en el piano).
