This collection of ballads by Dr. Yusef Lateef, musical gentle giant and unrecognized lyrical genius of the late-20th century, breaks the boundary between the poetic and the musical. In one sense these songs, by their tempo and harmonic and melodic structure, are musical ballads -- at least simply defined. In another, however, they are full of the nuances of poetry, sung poetry in that they employ no tropes -- each of these forms is original to the composition in that it has never been employed by the composer before this -- and they offer elliptical line breaks and flowing verses, much like the griot poetry of West Africa or the sung prosaic tales of the medieval Celtic bards. Accompanied by a trio of Stephen McCraven on drums, bassist Avery Sharpe, and Tom McClung on piano, as well as percussionist Adam Rudolph, Lateef, playing only tenor saxophone, creates a soulful body of impressionistic balladry that transcends current musical categories. On some tracks, such as the gorgeously spare "Night Song," which opens the album, Lateef employs the use of the drummer's tools to further a sketchy melodic idea. Others, such as the trilogy "You Are Me," "You Are Him," and "You Are Them," use different harmonic elements to tell the story fragmentally. Melodic invention moves out in horizontal rather than linear fashion and offers the pianist the opportunity to create a frame for the shimmering melodic fragments that come from the horn. When the three compositions are completed, the real surprise is that the story continues in great, tender waves of grace until the final equation completes itself in "All Are One" to close the recording. The elegance and spiritual truth in these ballads comes shining through in how deliberately this band works with Lateef to let the songs speak for themselves without unnecessary embellishment. The result is one Lateef's most aesthetically beautiful outings, and that's saying plenty given his body of work.
