Tenor saxophonist Jack Montrose, a veteran of the 1950s West Coast jazz scene, made his first record in quite a few years in 1990. Teamed with trombonist Bill Watrous, pianist Pete Jolly, bassist Chuck Berghofer, and drummer Nick Martinis, Montrose performs nine originals by labelhead David Holt. Although none of the songs caught on, Montrose's arrangements and the solos are at a high level. The music ranges from bossa novas and boppish pieces to "Waltz for Trombone." Montrose still sounds in his playing prime and Watrous and Jolly are at their usual high levels. Despite the lack of familiar material, this disc will satisfy straight-ahead jazz collectors.

El saxofonista tenor Jack Montrose, veterano de la escena jazzística de la Costa Oeste de los años 50, grabó en 1990 su primer disco en bastantes años. Junto con el trombonista Bill Watrous, el pianista Pete Jolly, el bajista Chuck Berghofer y el batería Nick Martinis, Montrose interpreta nueve temas originales de David Holt. Aunque ninguna de las canciones llegó a cuajar, los arreglos de Montrose y los solos están a un gran nivel. La música va desde bossa novas y piezas boppish hasta "Vals para trombón". Montrose sigue sonando en su plenitud interpretativa y Watrous y Jolly están a su alto nivel habitual.
