Gene Ludwig & Pat Martino Trio • Young Guns

Dated cinematic reference aside, Young Guns is a germane title for this archive tape from guitarist Pat Martino’s personal collection. At the time of its taping between 1968 and 1969 Martino still fit the mantle of fresh-faced ace plectrist, and he’d recently hooked up with pianist-turned-organist Gene Ludwig to co-lead this touring trio. His and Ludwig’s highest-profile gig together would come shortly after, serving alongside drummer Randy Gelispie as the rhythm section on Sonny Stitt’s Night Letter session for Prestige.

The setting here is quite removed than that comparatively sedate studio date. Non-descript in name, Club 118 in Louisville, Kentucky, was typical of the kind of bar that catered to the Southern soul jazz crowd. It was a familiar sort of venue for Martino, who began his professional career at the start of the Sixties as a teenage addition to saxophonist Willis Jackson’s organ combo, with which he’d amass precocious gig experiences. Stints with organists Don Patterson and Jack McDuff followed in short order. Ludwig and Gelispie worked similar circuits, the former operating out of a florid Jimmy Smith-influenced bag for much of his early career, which he brings to the proceedings here.

Seven pieces parceled from several dates offer up plenty of aggressive interplay, starting with the Smith-style swells that open a nearly 14-minute reading of “Who Can I Turn To?” Precision octaves and racing single-note runs are regular facets of Martino’s arsenal and the guitarist repeatedly ramps the tempo, testing Ludwig and Gelispie, who give it right back in return. Martino’s speedy solo on “Mr. PC” delivers an early highlight, setting a high bar for Ludwig, who does his best to top it. Gelispie keeps things moving, entering regularly into energetic exchanges with both of his partners and affecting a loose but versatile approach at his kit, stamped by audible grunts and groans. Even a comparatively laidback number like the bossa-inflected “Watch What Happens” smolders at a slow burn and finds the players trying to playfully one-up each other.

Martino’s later career was full of peaks and valleys, including the onset of a brain aneurysm that required him to relearn his instrument from scratch. Over the years, he would return to organ combo format of his origins, evidence of its enduring viability as an outlet for his artistry. If there’s gripe to be made in comparing this Martino of old to his more mature guises, it’s in the bombast of some of his and his partners’ passages herein. Once again that’s where the collection’s title comes in and any excesses in expression by three musicians enamored of their prodigious skills can readily occasion forgiveness.
