VA • Midnite Blues Party Vol. 2

Review by Steve Leggett
This is a wonderful collection of extremely rare blues and R&B 78s from the late '40s and early '50s, compiled and sequenced by Toronto native Eddy Brake (Eddy B.). None of these sides have ever been on CD before, and while the sound transfers exhibit the snaps, pops, crackles, and omnipresent hiss inherent to these kinds of projects, none of it is too seriously intrusive. There is a little bit of everything here, from piano boogies to small orchestra jump blues pieces, all of it exhibiting a fascinating energy and intimacy. Highlights include Chocolate Williams' piano and affecting voice on "Good Story Blues," Mike McKendrick's "Lonesome Baby Blues" (if Alex Chilton is still in his R&B phase, he should cover this song immediately), the proto-rockabilly of Bobby Prince's "Tell Me Why, Why, Why," and the spooky, cavernous organ sound that carries "Gone Are the Days" by Gayle Brown. While this release is intended mostly for archivists and collectors, the tracks here are so raw and energetic that casual listeners will no doubt connect to it as well. It definitely won't slow your party down.

Definitivamente no retrasará tu fiesta.
