This release presents Hampton Hawes’ complete original quartet album For
Real (Contemporary S7589), featuring his first collaborations ever with
saxophonist Harold Land (they would only record together again in the
mid-1970s). The album also marks Hawes’ only existing recordings with
Scott LaFaro. Three trio performances recorded during that date but not
included on the original LP have also been added. No previous CD edition
of For Real contained these tracks, which complete the session. Also
this release is rounded out with two rare live trio recordings by the
pianist, taped in Rome in the company of Jimmy Woode and Kenny Clarke.
