Stephane Grappelli • Opportunity

This is very much, in ‘football-speak’, a disc of two halves. The first six tracks are Grappelli originals and all recorded in 1973. The remainder are compositions by pianist Gérard Gustin and were set down in Nice six years later. Grappelli was clearly in relaxed, semi-classical mood when writing his six; there’s a sense of coasting, to be frank, that his fruity vibrato (much wider than one normally hears) doesn’t do much to disguise. There’s a semi-demi quotation from You’re Getting To Be A Habit With Me in his tune Emotion but apart from Sewing’s dependably swinging bass on Gerba there’s little to detain the enthusiast, much less the more casual listener.

The later date comes from a time when Grappelli was enjoying renewed celebrity with his international quintet. Gustin’s tunes and arrangements are more straight ahead with bop tinges. There’s a tighter sense of balance and the session sounds more keyed up altogether. Gustin has the time to stretch out and solo on Country Club in a way he couldn’t six years earlier and there’s bluesy swing to Kent where Cavallaro kicks the front line with his best playing of the date. Grappelli responds with utter sang froid and considerable wit.

In the end though neither date is sufficiently galvanizing or imaginative and at thirty five minutes this is pretty short measure. More for completists. Jonathan Woolf

Esto es mucho, en "football-speak", un disco de dos mitades. Los primeros seis temas son originales de Grappelli y todos grabados en 1973. El resto son composiciones del pianista Gérard Gustin y fueron publicadas en Niza seis años más tarde. Grappelli estaba claramente en un estado de ánimo relajado y semiclásico al escribir sus seis años; hay una sensación de costa, para ser franco, que su vibrato frutal (mucho más amplio de lo que uno oye normalmente) no hace mucho para disimular. Hay una cita semi-demi de You're Getting To Be A Habit With Me en su melodía Emotion, pero aparte de los confiables bajos de Sewing en Gerba, hay poco para detener al entusiasta, y mucho menos al oyente más casual.

Esta última fecha se remonta a una época en la que Grappelli disfrutaba de una celebridad renovada con su quinteto internacional. Las melodías y arreglos de Gustin son más rectos con matices bop. Hay un sentido de equilibrio más apretado y la sesión suena más nerviosa. Gustin tiene tiempo para estirarse y trabajar en solitario en el Country Club de una manera que no pudo hacerlo seis años antes, y hay un swing blues en Kent, donde Cavallaro patea la primera línea con su mejor juego de la fecha. Grappelli responde con un canto froid y un ingenio considerable.

Al final, sin embargo, ninguna de las dos fechas es lo suficientemente galvanizadora o imaginativa, y a los treinta y cinco minutos esto es una medida bastante corta. Más para los completistas. Jonathan Woolf
