Sandro Roy • Souvenir De Paris

The print media wasted no time upon release of his debut album, “Where I Come From”. The German news weekly Der Spiegel: “Fabulous start for a mega-talent.” NEUE MUSIKZEITUNG, a trade magazine for the music biz, voted it Debut of the Month, and “Münchner Konzertgesellschaft”, a non-profit association famed for promoting classical music and now Jazz as well, awarded him its Jazz Incentive Prize. Numerous appearances, for instance at the Rheingau Musik Festival or at ‘hot’ Jazz clubs throughout Germany, had audiences thundering for more.

Two years later this young violinist is now returning with a project devoted to France as its thematic focus: amazingly mature and conceptually coherent in the choice of content, yet sparkling with facets that surprise again and again. “Souvenir De Paris”, the title track, one of his own compositions and a very poetic dedication to the city that, in his opinion, “has inspired so many musicians,” readily demonstrates that the lyrical tone of this young man from a small city in southern Germany has ripened to global sophistication. It seems only natural that the great French musicians and composers such as Michel Legrand, Babik Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli have inspired him. Yet interestingly enough, it’s the younger Jazz generation that spurs him on to thrillingly new interpretations, musicians like Michel Petrucciani and Richard Galliano.

For this album he chose the members of the Jermaine Landsberger Trio as accompanists. Landsberger, who like Roy stems from a Sinti family, supports the violin player with a number of arrangements and distinguishes himself via solo work on the piano as the perfect counterpart to Sandro Roy’s playing. Very special highlights are set by two more guest artists with established ‘names’ in French-speaking regions: Marcel Loeffler, a blind accordion-player who can be heard together with Sandro Roy as a duo on the French classics “Tendre Reve” and “Paris Violon”, and together with the trio on the Richard Galliano composition entitled “Waltz For Nicky”. Such tracks are followed by breathtaking moments playing with Roby Lakatos, a highly esteemed violinist in classical circles, where dizzyingly divine dialogs arise on Irving Berlin’s “Let’s Face The Music And Dance” and “Gipsylogy”.

“Souvenir De Paris” underscores Sandro Roy’s rare gift for picking and choosing from sources in classical music and Jazz in a remarkable way, for allowing his music to become a stand-alone cosmos marked by virtuoso performance, and all that on what may very well be the most difficult instrument of all, the violin.

Los medios impresos no perdieron el tiempo con el lanzamiento de su álbum debut, "Where I Come From". El semanario alemán Der Spiegel: "Fabuloso comienzo para un mega-talento." NEUE MUSIKZEITUNG, una revista especializada en el mundo de la música, lo eligió Debut del mes, y "Münchner Konzertgesellschaft", una asociación sin ánimo de lucro famosa por la promoción de la música clásica y ahora también del Jazz, le otorgó el Premio Incentivo al Jazz. Numerosas apariciones, por ejemplo en el Rheingau Musik Festival o en clubes de jazz "calientes" de toda Alemania, hicieron que el público se sintiera atraído por más.

Dos años más tarde, este joven violinista regresa con un proyecto dedicado a Francia como eje temático: sorprendentemente maduro y conceptualmente coherente en la elección de los contenidos, pero repleto de facetas que sorprenden una y otra vez. "Souvenir De Paris", la canción del título, una de sus propias composiciones y una dedicación muy poética a la ciudad que, en su opinión, "ha inspirado a tantos músicos", demuestra fácilmente que el tono lírico de este joven de una pequeña ciudad del sur de Alemania ha madurado hasta convertirse en una sofisticación global. Parece natural que los grandes músicos y compositores franceses como Michel Legrand, Babik Reinhardt y Stephane Grappelli le hayan inspirado. Pero, curiosamente, es la generación más joven del Jazz la que le estimula a nuevas y emocionantes interpretaciones, músicos como Michel Petrucciani y Richard Galliano.

Para este álbum eligió a los miembros del trío de Jermaine Landsberger como acompañantes. Landsberger, que al igual que Roy proviene de una familia sinti, apoya al violinista con una serie de arreglos y se distingue por su trabajo en solitario en el piano como la contrapartida perfecta a la interpretación de Sandro Roy. Otros dos artistas invitados con "nombres" establecidos en las regiones francófonas ponen de relieve aspectos muy especiales: Marcel Loeffler, un acordeonista ciego que puede ser escuchado junto a Sandro Roy como dúo en los clásicos franceses "Tendre Reve" y "Paris Violon", y junto al trío sobre la composición de Richard Galliano titulada "Waltz For Nicky". A continuación, se suceden los impresionantes momentos de juego con Roby Lakatos, un violinista de gran prestigio en los círculos clásicos, donde surgen vertiginosos diálogos divinos sobre "Let's Face The Music And Dance" (Enfrentemos la música y la danza) y "Gipsylogy" (Gipsylogy), de Irving Berlin.

"Souvenir De Paris" subraya el raro don de Sandro Roy para escoger y escoger de entre las fuentes de la música clásica y el Jazz de una manera notable, por permitir que su música se convierta en un cosmos independiente marcado por una interpretación virtuosa, y todo ello con lo que puede ser el instrumento más difícil de todos, el violín.
